Well, yesterday managed to find a helmet to fit my circumferous head and fitted the Bean trailer to the bike.

LadyWayne, Bean and I headed out yesterday afternoon for a quick cycle round the village and a quick stop off to see the allotment (LadyWayne hasn't seen it for months).

It was bladdy cold - especially in the wind, so we didn't stay out for long.

However, even though it was only a short ride, I'm beginning to realise how unfit I am, and need to get my fitness levels back up to something that resembles my former self. I have a habit of not giving up, and LadyWayne's concern is that I may do myself an injury or make myself unwell by pushing myself beyond my capabilities.

    Time to raise my capabilities!

Mr TS is also unfit, and he has 100 excuses to not join me on a bike ride, even though the bike is nearly as fast as a car for our journeys (3 miles) and definitely faster than the bus.

My tactic this year will be to get him to cycle to the nice pubs that are about 3-6 miles away. That will build his fitness without him feeling it so much (thanks to the beer)

My tactic for getting fitter is to put some intervals in my normal ride: intervals of one minute's really fast, flat out cycling. Ideal if you don't have the time for a longer ride: just make it a harder one

I'm kind of similar - I've kept the knobbly tyres on for now. Also attaching the trailer makes it more difficult (wind resistance and added weight).

I need to do some hill work in preparation for Ditchling Beacon!

If I still had your address, I would send you a bit of inspirational reading. As I dont, I suggest you pop onto Amazon and order a copy of:
                    French Revolutions by Tim Moore.

Absolutely brilliant, just one word of warning, dont read it in public areas!!

                      Sorry, it's early.

WARNING: This post is a plea for money.

As mentioned in my "I wasn't even drunk" thread I have signed up to take part in the British Heart Foundation London to Brighton Bike Ride 2010.

I've set myself a target of raising £150 for this worthwhile charity, and have been amazed so far at the generosity of those that have already donated - and I'm already a good way toward reaching my target.

It's the first time I've done anything like this and I really would like to make it count.

Can I ask (rather cheekily I know) that anyone that can, please sponsor me - every little helps as famously said once (or twice).

I've an online sponsorship page here:

British Heart Foundation - Wayne Coulter's Fundraising Page

Many thanks in advance - I really do appreciate it.

Tried out my new padded shorts yesterday morning.

Set out from the village and thought to myself "right, let's have a go at that hill" (there's a quite steep hill just out of the village and I thought it was good practise). Made it a third of the way up before having to stop.

Turned back and set about - see where I ended up.

Rode out through several villages, one in particular threw a bladdy great steep hill at me - which I stopped halfway up to have a breather and then made it to the top in the second attempt.

12 miles round trip, 1 hour.

Not a great ride by many standards I know, but a good (if slightly late) start. Going out for a couple more rides this week - will hopefully up the mileage as I'll have a riding partner who's on a proper road bike so I'll hopefully be pushed along.

                        Not long now!!

12mph is perfectly respectable. I only average 10mph around town (what with having to stop for traffic lights etc)
