Worried about my darling dog!

My Gemma (her pic is my avatar) collided with a fallen tree (running past, just a bit too close) and broke her leg in 2 places. Looks like a very nasty injury, she's in the vet hospital awaiting the ortho-specialist decision whether they can fix it there, or whether they need to send her to a specialist place.

Oh Hilary I am sorry to hear your news - it sounds like the vets are on the case though and she is in the right place. Let's hope it all proves uncomplicated and she'll be on the mend and home soon.

Ohh.. poor Gemma! I hope they're able to pin it back together. Worse case scenario, even if they can't fix it.. surely they could amputate? She could still have a very happy mobile life, even if only with three legs.

Poor you and her. There is nothing worse than worrying about a darling dog. My two are forever knocking lumps off themselves and it never gets any easier.
She is in the right place and no doubt will be being looked after and given all the attention she needs - even if you can't be with her. I hope they can fix her leg but even if they can't I am sure she will be happy if the worst comes to the worst and she has just 3 legs...

So sorry to here about your dog, they are part of the family. She is in the best place, hopefully back home soon as good as new. I have two dogs so understand how you feel.

Sorry to hear about your dog Hilary.

I'm sure they'll do their best for but if it is too badly damaged she could adapt, as many others have, to being a tripod. She looks lovely by the way.

So sorry to read about Gemma. I have two dogs and am distraught if they are ever hurt or unwell.

A specialist vet I attend in Doncaster has some pictures up of a dog that he treated for a leg that was broken in two places. The dog made a full recovery only to break the same leg yet again. That break was also mended and the pictures show a dog full of life and energy. If you hadn't been told the dog had been injured you would never know.

Hope all goes well and that Gemma (like the dog in the pictures) is soon running about and chasing her ball.

I can fully empathise with you, last year the younger of my two springers was attacked by a Staffy, it hit her so hard from the side that it fractured her right elbow (lucky it had a muzzle on otherwise she would have been ripped to bits), straight to the hospital with her and an examination, several xrays, 2 screws, £1600 vets fees and 10 weeks of lead walking and she was as good as new,

Skip forward to the end of last month now, out with the dogs and the younger of the two decides she's going to run and jump over a fallen branch, she cleared the branch no problems, on landing though her left leg disappeared down a rabbit hole but her momentum however has carried her forward, another trip to the vets, yep you guessed, a fracture of her left elbow this time, again several xrays, only the one screw needed this time though and yet another bill for £1600. Her rehab is coming on in leaps and bounds and with fingers crossed there is going to be no lasting lameness.

I'm luckier than you though in that my veterinary practice opened up a brand spanking new at the beginning of last year, 8.6 million pound animal hospital. Kibi, my youngest Springer has twice now been operated on by the resident orthopaedic vetenary surgeon (one of the partners) and apart from scars is seemingly back to her normal daft self. Only another weeks worth of lead excercise to go thank goodness.

It is truly amazing the surgery that can be performed on animals nowadays with very high success rates. Don't despair, I'm sure the vet will do everything in their power to make sure your dog is as comfortable and pain free as possible. All that's left for me to say is - Get well soon pup .

Oh hillary that's awful., poor Gemma. It's horrible when pets are poorly but your vet sounds like everything is in control and I'm sure they will do their best for her. Big hugs to you both.
