Ollie I've told you about this one before that definitely had deffo got INIT IN IT (innit)
Two Sheds - these days it can take so long to get a 'diagnosis' for various dyslexia type problems with reading and spelling that sometimes it is better to use the techniques without waiting. For example, I bought some sheets of coloured acetate from the art shop, laid them over the page and got my pupil to select the one that helped the most. Tracking exercises can help too.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I am not being critical (or maybe I am). In the 1940's the main aim of education was the 3 R's. The reasoning for this was 'don't muddle the brain' - step by step. We as infants found it fun to compete against each other in mental arithmetic. These games were played before registration (in our own time) and became an incentive to learning and to be hopefully quicker than the others. There was a weekly prize.
