What to grow up a pergola

Inspired by a fellow Grape's post (I think Snadger) where I saw a 4-post pergola erected I took about digging a couple of holes yesterday and shoved some timbers in the ground. I only managed two yesterday on account that the ground was so boggy, but I got to thinking - ok, when I make this, what am I going to grow up it?

I have a couple of those shop bought rose arches so will most likely grow roses up them, but what to grow up me pergola?

Any suggestions welcome - don't have to be edible either.

Full sun (on the plot), no real aspect as it'll be four sided effectively so shouldn't matter too much should it?

I'd like one at home too - but it's either in the dark bit, where nothing would grow, or it the sunny bit shading everything else.

I've sighted it so that the only thing it will really cast much shade over is the path betwix mine and next doors plot, and I'm considering creating a seated/play area - thinking ahead like.

I would plant a kiwi up one side and a vine up the other.
Both grow well in the UK, if you get the right varieties, and with full sun, you would be pretty unlucky not to get a decent crop most years.

I had one in my old garden that coverd the path, half way along. I had 2 climbing roses (Zephyrine Drouhan and Kathleen Harrop) and 2 clematis growing through them. One was Polish Spirit - can't remember the other but it was a summer flowering big, light purple one. They looked gorgeous with the pinks of the roses. I also had summer jasmine - scent lovely.

I've just pulled down all of the passion Flower from mine & thanks to TS (I think it was), I'm gonna have a go at growing butternut squash up it........Good luck Wayne with whatever you decide.

I usually grow two types of tall peas up mine but this year I'm going to plant a grapevine on one side and a climbing rose on tuther. I also like Zephrin Droughin and have a plant at home I hope to transplant at the allotment along with a grapevine I grew in a pot outdoors last year!

Yay, Flum, I have Kathleen Harrop sprinting up the wall by my front door - she usually has a few buds on her most months, unless I have been particularly vicious in my pruning (every few years) - also with a clematis twined through.
I bet this combo would suit Lady Wayne, a nice arbour to sit in! How about putting the sweet peas up there, Wayne?

I've got grapevines up mine. I managed to buy some which had long (2m) stems before they branch out at 90 degrees to the stem. Therefore, the stem goes up the verticals, and the branchy bits are being trained over the horizontals. If the ground is normally boggy you might need to dig some grit in to improve the drainage.
