I can't think of a time when I've been without animals, dogs, cats, sheep, poultry, goats ,horses et al, yet I do wonder sometimes what an unfettered life would be like or what (maybe) bliss it would be to lie in bed all of Sunday mornings or even to lie in bed after seven of a morning!! Or to go out of an evening and not have to get back to put hens away, let dogs out, milk goats etc. I dare say I would be bored witless after awhile and long for some animal companionship.
I fully understand though people not wanting animals, they are a far bigger commitment than a human partner!
I have always felt different from most folks in that "I don't like animals". It's not that I do not care about them and would ever do them any harm but I have no wish for them to share my space. Am I alone?
Yes! Only joking Bren!
I've always loved animals, every kind, wild, pet, creepy crawlies, anything & was only ever allowed budgies & goldfish when I was at home & so got a dog when we'd been married a few years & adored her. We said we'd not have any more pets after she died but have ended up with a cat left by the neighbours but this time after she goes I'm going to try & resist as they are a tie.
I understand why you don't like animals, I didn't like cats. I was always a dog person but when my last bassett died I said I wouldn't have another pet as it was so much hassle if I had to go away on business or holiday. Then about three years ago I was adopted by a cat which I later found out had been abandoned and living on the streets for about 5 months. He just decided he was going to stay and I haven't regretted his decision for one minute. OK so he can be a pest at times but more than makes up for it in affection. I still have the same problem if I go away, but found a lovely cattery which he seems to like so we're both happy. Wouldn't be without him for the world. Can't think now why I thought I didn't like cats.
Bren, I think you are being hard on yourself by saying "you don't like animals", for as you also said, you do care about them and would never harm one. You just recognise the fact that you are not an "animal person". There is a big difference between the two.
I used to work in the retirement home where Charles Causley - the poet- resided and he said that if someone said they didn't like animals (as in REALLY didn't like them), then they were not to be trusted as they had something missing from their hearts.
Anyone with an avatar like yours cannot possibly fall into that catagory!

Ive always had animals. Was brought up with them, but was also brought up to understand that they are a responsibility, and that as we chose to have them it is up to us to care for them properly..including feeding, cleaning and exercising them before sitting down for that desperately needed cup of tea.
Its not for everyone and why on earth should you fell 'alone' because of it? You are being way too hard on yourself. If I remember from other posts dont you have children?
I dont, and at the age of 50 this year I have no regrets about it. Its not because I cant but because I never wanted to. Fortunately my OH feels the same. Like you with animals I would never see children hurt or abused, but dont want the 24hr a day up to 18yr commitment. Some people think that makes me odd, but thank goodness we arent all the same. I am good with kids but have no maternal feelings towards them.
Each to their own, you are who you are...enjoy it.

I'm a bit of an ignoramus in general, even more so when it comes to poetry, and have to say I'd never heard of Charles Causley, but what a fantastic line.

Life's disappointments are so much harder to take if you don't know any swear words.

It was a bit wierd meeting him, as he was one of the poets I studied for my 'O' Level Eng Lit exam. He's in a slim volume called "Poets of Our Time", if you're interested. Lovely man. Wrote "The Ballard of Charlotte Dymond" - I can still quote large bits of it!

Having just taken on an elderly cat who dribbles when he purrs, whilst shaking his head, I can easily understand why people don't have pets. Then I go to bed on a cold night, grab a warm cat and think people wwho don't have pets are nutters (and cold).
Have had no pets growing up and not bothered now. I do think about having a cat but I'd probably be allergic to it. We work full time and commute so no one is at home minimum 12 hours a day so it's not a suitable house for pets anyways, unless they were fish that didn't like company.
