The reason for the potholes that is.

It struck me (no pun intended) as I was making my way back from Sainsburys this afternoon, through the torrential rain, negotiating what was previously a road and now resembles the landing sight of Lunar 1.

It's a tax thing!

As the world moves towards more fuel efficient cars, the government is losing out - both in terms of the VAT on the purchase price and in terms of fuel duty, road tax and so on.

The solution?

Leave the roads in a state of absolute disrepair and force the UK driver to purchase a 4x4 to get from A to B.

The sly beggars!

this, amongst other reasons, is why i use buses and trains a lot more nowadays.
the car is basically for getting to places not conveniently located for reaching via public transport or for when i have lots of heavy stuff to move about.

Oh, and I think it must be a Europewide plot to get everyone to buy 4x4's because the roads are pretty bad here too

The plot was to get everyone in there cars, so that they do not get any exercise, and then when they are all the size of a barrel they will need to buy a 4x4.

It always seem strange to me that the highways dept take so long at getting a road nice and level............then thay stick speed ramps on it? The same as they make junctions and roundabouts nice and flat then paint chevrons on a goodly portion of it?

Next we'll be asked to look upon dodgy roads as saving the taxpayer paying for speedramps or chevrons!

I think you are giving 'them' too much credit for joined up thinking there, HW - and BW - they just don't make those kinds of calculations!
I think the local council is responsible for its local potholes and the Highways Agency is responsible for the motorways and dual carriageways. And all of them have been affected.

There is a road in Exmouth that has been closed off except to people that live there because the road is so bad with pot holes and they have said it wont be fixed for 18 months !!!!!!

Don't forget all those repairs you have to have done to your car damaged by the pot holes, more VAT for the Government.

I heard last year that the amount of money we spend on replacing/repairing worn out/damaged tyres and suspension parts on our cars, caused by bad roads and speed-bumps, comes to more than the cost of putting in the speed bumps and repairing the pot-holes!

The way to look at the problem is to treat the pot hole's as upside down speed ramps because that is what they are..
The reason is they used all the spare tarmac to make the Speed ramps because that is the last thing they are you cannot go fast over them.
So the thing to do is go out and buy some shares in a tarmac company and if you make a profit you can use the money for the repairs on your car.
This only my disjointed way of looking at things but probably near the truth.jacob

There's a pothole at the end of one of our roads that is so deep that a geyser has appeared in a small town in New Zealand, causing some consternation amongst the local community.

I am of course being fastidious.
