Hi all
Just joined up and thought i would say hello. This is my first time on a veggie plot. Just bought and sucsessfully erected the greenhouse and dug over the plot (phew) at least the soil here in wildest Cornwall is easy to dig. Tomorrow i will be shoveling a couple of cubic meters of well rotted horse poo into my car, (curtisy of lands end riding school). Do'es this gardening thing dull the senses or is it the onset of old age that makes me want to fill my new Berlingo with poo.

Welcome to the vine, there are lots of people here who will advise and encourage you and give you a good laugh as well.

Why don't you look in on Shirlthegirl's birthday party (General Chitchat) and you will see what I mean. You will see how slightly deranged we all are. So its not age or the gardening thing that makes you fill your new car with poo.

Hi ADJ - and welcome to the Vine! Not sure about you filling your car with poo! I remember as a child my father accidentally filled mothers car with fallen over sacks of pony poo - I remember the stink! and it wasn't from the pony poo! Not sure if my father ever recovered! LOL
Looking forward to reading your posts - don't be afraid to ask anything you may have a question about - lots of experienced gardeners here who can answer your questions.
I've still got lots to learn and having just taken on my first 1/2 lottie will no doubt have lots more to learn - I'm jealous that you've been able to dig yours over - Mine is covered in black plastic and with the 90mph winds last week - well! at least my new shed was still intact and virtually in the same place!
Other lottie owners werent so lucky.

Shoveling pony poo into your car is a completely normal pastime. I spent a fair portion of last weekend shoveling it into my trainers cos I couldn't find my wellies.

I have a Fiat Doblo for the purpose lined with a thick rubber mat. Capacity is six bags of pony poo, six bales of straw in it for mulching, and a passenger to haul it all around

Seems like you must be in the bit of Cornwall that is not rockbased if you can dig the soil with ease. My memories as a child were rocks, rocks and more rocks, but very fertile soil.
congrats on the greenhouse - can you tell Mr MB how to fit the glass bits please- he's a bit worried about getting it right and cutting the polycarbonate!

As far as the horsepoo issue goes, if it's wellrotted it don't smell - but avoid the liquid manure at the bottom of the heap - that's a devil to get rid of.
My peugeot 106 carried 3 garden sackfuls, 2 large adults and equipment with ease, but I used to make 3 trips at a time to get a proper load. It's a perfectly normal thing to do

My Astra Sport hasn't had pony poo in it yet, but not because I'm precious about it as just 3 days after buying it my little boy did an 'Excorcist' impression ALL over the back of the car

I think it is an age thing Ageing DJ. Nothing to do with OLD Just about reaching the age of reason, and a rationale about what is important for you personally. If you need to load pony poo in the back of your car to achieve that - go for it, Happy gardening.

I remember my father covering the inside of his car with exterior paint ..... Admittedly he was driving home after working a silly number of hours straight and hit a granite pillar on a bend but with hindsight it was extremely funny. Fortunately he only broke his thumb but that was the end of the Simca. Oh and they had to buy some more paint to do the outside of the house.

Thank you one and all for you kind welcoming messages, i don't get on line to often, but when i do i will be sure to visit. By the way got the horse poo into two jumbo bags, like the ones that builders deliver sand in. So 2 cubic meters have been dug in. In reply to Madderbat, yes i am foutunate to live in a part of Cornwall where you can dig down two spade depths easily.
