I dont want to scare you but do get it checked out thoroughly. Sudden onset IBS in women of 35 who have never had it before MAY and I stress it is only may be ovarian cancer. Ask your doctor to run a blood test to rule it out.WPC F Hobbit, Shire police

I was diagnosed with IBS years ago. Doc wasnt sure, but thankfully sent me to see a specialist.
I had tummy cramps, and could go from diaorreah (sp) to constipation and back in 12 hours. And I was eating less and less but still gaining weight, then it would plunge.
The specialist put me on an exclusion diet, thats a special diet which is strictly limited to foods which are known for not causing intolerance problems. It was quite difficult at first, but you soon get the knack. Then you start adding foods back in one at a time, and see what results you get. In my case I am intolerant of milk (lactose) which is very common. I was very good for a couple of years and avoided it like the plague, difficult at first cos lots of things have lactose in one form or another in. Then I added little bits in. I now know that cream goes through me in 1/2hr and causes the runs, but cheese I can eat, sometimes.. not regularly, and not in big quantities
...and so on. Some other thing set it off, but milks the worst and now I know that I'm much better.
And yes, stress makes it a lot worse.Anyone who says nothing is impossible has never tried slamming a revolving door

my wife has some thing with her bowels, she has like a mini fit she goes stiff for what seems like ages but is only 1-2 mins she says she gets diaher then is constipation going some times 3-4 times a day it seems to be getting worse she has seen the doctor so many times( i thought she was having an affair with him ) he has sent her to see all kinds of specialist ,she had a brain scan all clear, now he has sent her to see a nerolergist , they dont seem to know whats going on but still it's getting worse.
you start to wish they could find something so maybe they could do something towards treating it.

I have slow transit (I think) and can suffer some IBS symptoms such as wind, bloating and constipation. I had a gastrointestinal bug last year and ended up discussing such things with an A&E doc after the pain meant I gave in and went to see someone..and they agreed that I could have some troubles in that department and gave me a ream of leaflets to read.
I have to make myself drink plenty because deydration makes it worse, but have found that regular exercise (the walking) is really helping things improve.
I try to eat sensibly, but don't always succeed due to my work shifts and various other bad habits.
Hope you get it sorted janeyo.Kirsty b xx

I used to have it quite badly, i think mine was an allergy to wheat, i used to eat a slice of toast and then watch my stomach expand so i looked like i was 6 months pregnant, the doctor sent me to the hopsital for (i dont know what its called, but you drink this chalky stuff lay strapped on a bed that moves around like a fairground ride and they track the liquids journey through your stomach). In the end i just cut our certain foods and kept monitoring my diet for foods that caused a reaction and after 20 years, my allergies have either gone or considerably reduced.

I'd go the doctors route before taking any action. Any self-diagnosis/treatment could well aggravate things further.
LadyWayne used to suffer with IBS, but is a lot better now - almost cured one could say. My sister has Crohn's and other complications - she tried self diagnosis and made matters a lot worse before getting slowly better.

I totally agree with Wayne!
One thing to add to his pearls of wisdom is that if you have Cealiacs(gluten allergy) and cut out wheat/gluten before you have blood tests then the blood tests are pointless as they will come back that you're OK.Not sure if it's the same with other allergies/intolerances?
Get yourself checked out.If you're not satisfied with the answers you get from the Doc then start dipping into the self help books, just let him rule out anything first!the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

I second Wayne Janeyo. Doctor first...even if it seems it is IBS get checked up first. It may not be....or you may go down the wrong diet route and make yourself a lot worse, as everyone with IBS seems to have different food intolerances, and triggers. And some of the elimination diets you'll find on the net are plain bloody dangerous!!!!
Pip..I know the docs have probably tested but have they looked at Chrohns, and Diverticulitis? Just that I know people with both and they have some similar symptoms. Sadly though a lot of intestinal problems seem to cause similar symptoms.Anyone who says nothing is impossible has never tried slamming a revolving door
