They look absolutely gorgeous! Good luck with it Shirley

As for purchasing one... Errr.. No. Totally out of my league... £400 could buy a new car! Plus, none of mine were christened anyway

Thanks Sarz. Neither of ours were christened either - hence my 'market research'

I wouldn't be asking £400 quid for them - would be finding a simpler pattern to do!

Good grief Shirl....that's certainly some skill you have to even think about creating something as wonderful as that!!!
I think I must be more selfish than you- I'd be keeping it for myself!!!!

          Shine a light!

          Mad? Yes.

They do look nice though. Like Sarz, Bean's not Christened - he's not religious.

It is worth a try, Shirl, even if you stop at the one as a gift!
And the shade card proves my earlier point that the wool comes in gorgeous colours. Just imagine a range of those in different jewel colours, beatifully packaged in matching tissue paper and flat boxes with ribbons - as a gift for someone with a new baby or a for lady who needs pampering! The box would add to the heirloom element by providing the right storage! How fab.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

                      Why shouldn't I tempt you?

Baby alpaca wool would be gorgeous (but possibly not for a cobweb lace shawl)

How long might a 'simpler pattern' take do you think? I think they look gorgeous btw, but out of my league financially, and, like a few of us, mine haven't been christened (Pagans here ). Although of course there's still the 'gift for a new baby market', without the christening ceremony stuff.

Well, I have taken the plunge and bought the kit.

Pagans here too pipscariad (maybe a Pembrokeshire thing) but best man's mum is very religious and I think the shawl will be appreciated. Just hope my knitting skill is up to it now

When #1 son was born, one of OH's aunties knitted the most beautiful shawl for him.It wasn't as 'fine' as the one you're doing Shirley, but it was gorgeously soft and must have taken her hours and hours and hours to knit. We really loved it, and it was well used, then passed on to the next 2. We then handed it on to OH's sister who has used it for her 2. It's now in storage, and will be passed on to OHs niece very soon.

I think it's a fantastic idea for a gift, and your friends will hugely appreciate it, religious or not

Personally I think that they are absolutely beautiful but they're not for everybody. My niece had a baby a few weeks ago and something like this would be totally wasted on her as she only wants things which are easy to wash and tumble. She's wrap the baby up in it, the baby would be sick and she'd ruin it in the wash....... If you think it's something they would like then it's a lovely and very generous gift.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

What a fabulous idea Shirl! Your friends are lucky having such a talented friend to make something so precious for them. I'd love to see photos of how you get on.
