Morning everyone. After much head scratching last night we read the destructions ( ) and learned how to use the system recovery disk to return the PC to its factory state. Thankfully none of my files were lost, though I now have the chore of removing all the stuff which I have got rid of over the last 3 years. Am backing everything up on CD, NOW! Phew! A close one!

You can't go wrong Snadger - It holds almost the same amount as two DVD's.

The rush of blood when you think all your data will be lost in the blink of an eye.

Or one DVD if you use a dual-layer DVD9.

8GB stick for £12.99 is a decent size for a reasonable price, just hope they've got some left

Haven't been around for a while as having to use Mr A's PC. Finally discovered that the problem was in the motherboard. Bought a new one plus Windows 7 and I'm now set up again. Amazing how out of touch I felt over the last week or so.

I know how you feel......for some reason a piece of anti-virus software managed to get onto my pc last week & it took over all of the files, it told me every file was infected..........It was called "Antivirus Soft".....BEWARE OF THIS SOFTWARE.

My lap stop started telling me that one of my files needed sorting out then it went . I had a note telling me to re- install the Windows Xp and press r for recovery. My laptop came already with Xp installed so I didn't have a disc to use. My son-in-law had made me up a back up disc so put that in but nothing really happened .Then I read somewhere press Ctrl,Alt etc which I did and I had it back again. Its painfully slow and I think I might need to get a new battery, but am waiting for my son to come up so he can sort it out for me as I've no idea about getting the right battery . I think I'm definately going to get an external hard drive though. What are you supposed to do if you aren't given the Xp disc to start with.?

While it is booting up, press F8 which should start it in safe mode, from there you should have an option for you to do a system recovery to a previous date.........Thats what I had to do to get rid of the stupid software.

This happened to me, only two days ago. I had a Norton update, followed by lots of messages as OP describes, then BSOD!! As Bigmally suggested, I restarted in Safe Mode and uninstalled the update. So much for up to date protection, eh??

I didn't half kack me pants, even though lappy is insured for anything like this.
