  • Michael Foot Quote

While trawling the internet I picked up this fantastic quote.

"We are here to provide for those who are weaker and hungrier, more battered and crippled than ourselves. That is our only certain good and great purpose on earth, and if you ask me about those insoluble economic problems that may arise if the top is deprived of their initiative, I would answer, To hell with them...The top is greedy and mean and will always find a way to take care of themselves."

If there was ever a time to be proved right then this is it !

Michael Foot is one of my political hero's he will be sadly missed.
an excellent biography was published in 2007 by Kenneth O. Morgan.

Men of power have no time to read; yet the men who do not read are unfit for power.

Remember Neil Kinnock at a Bread and Roses event asking whether Michael Foot was a leg end in his own time

The last of the great Labour barnstormers and orators gone I'm afraid, still we did get Tony Blair, Geoff Hoon and the Milibrand Brothers to inspire us after Foot left Parliament - in their dreams!

Tony Benn can still do a "good turn" so can Dennis Skinner.

You see - while I agree with the "purpose" part of that... the compulsion and complete distain he shows for those who don't like that "help" being enforced sickens me.
"To hell with them" says "we're going to forcably take the fruits of your labour whether you like it or not."

That is a disgusting, illiberal and actually kinda violent view.

There are scores of examples proving his comment about the top being mean and greedy too. Grumble.

Sorry - that should have been "proving wrong" - ah well.
No rant thread for me - I'm all for helping people (just ask my elderly neighbours... and the Jewish ones I help when they have problems that can't be solved without "work" on Sabbath... and the homeless people I used to buy food and drink for whenever I saw them... and put in touch with charities that could help them...) - but socialism gets right up my nose, especially when it's so obviously spiteful.

I'm calm - had a great day digging - just thought I'd add this to point out that I'm not one of the "I earn a fortune and stuff anyone who doesn't" types (who also sicken me) and correct that omission.
