My rule has always been - If something makes you really angry compose a letter or an email saying exactly how you feel and what you think. Then go to bed and sleep on it. Re-read it and (probably or definitely) edit it before you send it.

That said; isn't this part of the forum for chat?...There is nothing wrong with debating a point on here...There wouldn't be much point (or interest) to it if we all agreed. I don't think there is any need to be personal but quite often You find people use 'I find that offensive' (often supposedly on somebody else's behalf) as they are losing an argument.

I think I've learnt over the years to engage the brain before putting the mouth in gear but sometimes things have to be said no matter what the outcome. If you feel that strongly about something then maybe it should be said and others should respect your views.

I work as a casual self moderator on part time hours. I usually consider going full-time, but sometimes I see a red rag and decide not to go into work that day.

Some people mistake debate for argueing, a good debate is wholesome so long as it does not degenerate into personal comments, the whole idea of debating is to offer your opinion and prove its worth. Some people see other peoples opinion as a red rag, some dont want to see others opinions and some dont like to see debating at all so use their power to prevent it. A shame really as without differing opinions what the point of a gardeninig forum where you ask for other peoples opinions on subjects.

I sometimes self-moderate because I'm quite thin-skinned & don't like to get into arguments, I don't mind a bit of healthy debate though but I tend to sit on the sidelines if something's getting too heated.
I do frequently get splinters from sitting on the fence though!

Sometimes we teach Socratic dialogue in school - once the students get the hang of it it boosts their confidence no end.
