I've just had to look twice at the price of petrol at my usual garage - it has just gone up by 4p a litre!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

what do you use the diesel for. If its for a car have you considered cooking oil. My OH & I both drive diesel landrovers & both are run on a 75/25 mix of cooking oil/diesel, saves a lot of money & smells wonderful

Something I have considered but I cannot find any reliable solid info on how to do it. I have read 1 website and it has conflicted with the 2nd website.

Maybe you'd like to elaborate on the subject?

Matthew - you could look into making bio-diesel with it... dunno if it's something you fancy but I believe there's plenty of info out there about how to do it.

Just bear in mind that you are supposed to pay fuel duty on any fuel you use - that includes cooking oil. It's one of those "never gonna get caught" things... until the day you pass a roadblock where they are checking for red, sample your tanks, find cooking oil and ask if you've paid the duty.

Considering duty accounts for most of the pump price of fuel the savings look a lot smaller if you do it all above board.

the regulations re using oil have changed & you are no longer required to register with HMRC unless you produce loads of the stuff (2500 ltrs I think but hubby has the paperwork filed away so cant check). We registered with HMRC & used to complete a monthly declaration which we completed & sent off with our cheque to pay the relevent duty, however this is no longer required & stopped months ago. I suggest you get in touch with HMRC. Also its not necessary to refine your oil. We just run it through a very fine seive or use unused cooking oil which we buy from food wholesalers. Our cars run better on cooking oil than straight diesel

the following is copied from HMRC web site

              HM Revenue & Customs

              4.2.1 Exempt producers/users
If you have produced or used less than 2,500 litres of:

              any biofuel, or
any other fuel substitute or additive
within the last 12 months, and/or expect to produce or use less than 2,500 litres in the next 12 months, you are an exempt producer and do not need to register with us and account for duty. However, there are simple record keeping requirements, which are described in paragraph 4.9.1.

Production includes the manufacture or processing of road fuel, and the setting aside of any product that has not been charged with duty, with the intention of using it as road fuel.

              4.9.1 Exempt producers’ records
If you are an exempt producer (as defined in paragraph 4.2.1) you only need to record and keep the following information:

the date of each supply and/or own use
the amount in standard litres of each supply or own use.
You should check the amounts produced at the end of each month. If you have produced 2,500 litres or more in the last 12 months, or expect to produce 2,500 litres or more in the next 12 months, you must contact us within 30 days to register your premises as described in paragraph 2.5.

so providing you keep accurate records you like us will be totally legal & contrary to what organic has said earlier you need have no concern regarding being stopped by anybody. We just carry our record book with us in the cars. We keep a record of both regular diesel & cooking oil. We just have a seperate column for each type of fuel. If your that concerned you could also print off a copy of the HMRC rules.

The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

Never mind fuel duty or VAT increases!

We've been hearing rumors for the last couple of years that when the local councils finally get around to rebanding properties for Council Tax , anyone with a veg patch and greenhouse will be deemed to have added value to their property and will be taxed at a higher rate!!!!!

People with TREE HOUSES will be rebanded due to added value.
Council tax is an appalling system. I'm fundamentally opposed to direct taxation to start with but council tax is getting close to the lowest of the low. There are a couple I detest more... but council tax comes in a close third.

                              Jacob...
That's another shower we'd be better off getting rid of. Shame it's not going to happen until after the 2015 (at the latest) general election though... going by the most conservative numbers I've seen that wait will cost us an extra £20 billion (which is less than a year's interest on our collective debt, but still a large amount of money none the less.

I do wonder how much taxation it's going to take to make this country explode. The sooner we get rid of the 99% of the snouts lined up at the trough the better but I can't understand why people take so much abuse with little more than a grumble. The Americans revolted over something like a 3% tax.

Flighty - thanks for the info about the allowance. I'd forgotten it was duty free for the first chunk you make/use.
