...and people wonder why I really don't like gift-giving rituals.
I do give them, but it causes so much bloody stress I wonder if it's worth it sometimes.

I've got to the point now where I only buy something I'm absolutely certain would be appreciated, if I'm a bit unsure I subtly fish for info and if I still can't tell I'll tell them outright that I'm thinking of something but don't want to buy something they don't appreciate.

That's exactly what I'd do. Maybe not even wait for the interval.

Say the seats were hurting your back, or something if you're asked.

(I have every sympathy: I was "treated" to an Abba tribute show with 2 relatives of Mr TS who I didn't really know, while the blokes went off to the races. I absolutely hate singing, esp. in public and I'm not a fan of Abba either. It was excrutiating having to clap along for 2 hours.)

Honestly I think you are a right plonker. If you and your sister were that close she should already know your likes and dislikes. And, you would not be that scared of offending her. Get a dvd and all stay in.

Seems to me like you have the obvious excuse and you're completely missing it......

                  Bean!!

                  It goes like this:

                  A) dont want to go at all = 2pm on day - casually phone sister and during conversation express concern Beans a bit off today. Followed by 2nd telephone conversation at 5.30 saying he's just not him self, slight temperature (its up to you on that one) so you don't want to leave him. Then it's something like 'what a shame, do you want to go instead? blah blah blah

                  B) leave Bean up and go out on your night. Have a meal then when you think it's appropriate call and see how they're getting on. By this time Bean will be running ring around them, they'll be a bit wired / frazzled / freaked and you say you're coming home to help settle him as he's not normally like that etc etc.

Alone? In a theatre full of aging rockers?
