Bah - good story but I was actually hoping for a decent long spade!
Speaking of which (and quite apart from the impressivly record-breaking spade) - as a fellow tall'un - do you have a decent length spade or are you also cursed to using the normal ones made for a person of "average" height (meaning it's too short for half of the world's population!)? If so, what is it, how much is it and where can I get one?
(I'm 6'2" if that helps at all.)

To be honest with you I've never found a decent long handled 'standard' spade.
I use a long handled spade, and a medium azada - from this place;
Get Digging with Alternative Tools for the Allotment and Garden
I think Sneeboer make long handled 'standard' spades, but they're prohibitively expensive.

I've noticed the "quality" thing - the best I've seen so far was a budget thing at some DIY place that we don't have around here (I saw it on their website)... but it was part of the cheap range.
Those Draper ones look like they might be promising though. I like that they use a standard handle for ease of replacement. I might have to look into that.
Wayne, 5'19" is nicely put!
I've been on that get-digging site before but couldn't find it again. Thanks for the link. I've been thinking about getting an azada but all being well I won't have a great deal of use for one for a while once I've finished digging over my site... hopefully the "no walking on the beds" approach will mean I don't need to dig again for a good while.
