My first cake

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the cooking section, but feel free to move it mods.
I've just made my first ever cake!
Since the girls have started laying 4 eggs a day, and the fact my neighbour Mike, who also has four girls, told me he had started baking - I thought I'd better give it a go.
Well, I had 3 ripe bananas, so have made the banana cake recipe from the kitchen section of the vine.
I also used my (very cheap) hand mixer to mix it alltogether. (It smelt like it was burning!!!).
Think it's OK. It's in the oven cooking now.
Only 25 minutes to go. Will let you know how I get on!

Well, I did make a cake years ago, just the one, can't even remember how it turned out. I don't think that counts.
Ginger, you are being very positive - I'll let you know how it looks when it comes out of the oven!
Looking forward to learning the skill of baking - and I DO think it is a skill. Its so precise, Im the kind of cook who throws stuff in, doesn't measure anything and it turns out OK.

My nana used to be able to bake like that - she measured by eye. But I think it was easier because she'd used the same mixing bowl for decades

Well, it looks OK, is cooked OK, and smells OK. I'll have to let it cool before I can try it. Will let you know later.

I have my grandmother's mixing bowl! Actually, I have two of hers - one is a Mason Cash and one is too old for that - it is a giant salt glazed pancheon. Used for large mixes!
I don't make too many cakes though (not worth it just for me).

That sounds great Bernie - now all we need to know is does it stand up to the taste test!

My Mum when she was alive use to make a scrummy chocky cake that way, she never weighed anything she did it all by eye, I've never been able to replicate her recipe no matter how much I tried.

I really, really hope you didn't use eggs straight from the hen! My MIL couldn't understand why my cakes were bigger and fluffier than hers. Eggs need to be laid for at least 3 days before cooking or they don't rise properly.

Nothing more delicious than a freshly laid egg, they just aren't any good for cakes as the whites don't hold air.

This morning our village Cake Club (guess who started that? - 18 months ago now) had a ginger cake (with the preserved ginger cut up fine) and a mincemeat cake - well, there's always some left after Christmas, and both had my chooks eggs in. Lovely!
I love baking, Had to start the Cake club to get my regular fix without becoming globular in shape!

I didn't know that Janie! Bit like you shouldn't use them straight out of the fridge for various things but should let them warm up a bit.

I didn't know that eggs could be too fresh you learn something new everyday.
My mum doesn't weigh anything and refuses to write anything down just like her mum. I dream of a recipe book past down from generation to generation. Brought said book with the intention of starting it and so far have put nothing in it. So it turns out i'm just like my mum.

It the cake doesn't turn out pour custard over it and called it a banana sponge pudding. No one will be any the wiser.
