Kissykit wanted home cooked fish and chips to night, so OH went to get the fish earlier. I just started to prepare it, skinned, boned etc, then washed it off. I wondered what the brown marks were, worms in the cod. I've heard of this but never seen them before. OH has hared off to take it back (phoned the supermarket first to check it's open), but I'm not sure I really fancy fish tonight now. She's OK about it, she didn't atctually see them, and trusts me to check everything she eats is OK

Food Standards Agency says:
"When fish is cooked thoroughly, so it's steaming hot all the way through, any worms in the fish will be killed and it will be fine to eat. Eating fish containing a dead worm shouldn't do you any harm. Eating fish containing live worms can cause inflammation in the stomach or the gut and make you ill.

Freezing raw fish also kills any worms"

How do they get there?

Parasitic round worms are frequently found in the stomach and flesh of fish. These worms can grow up to 4 cm long and can vary in colour from cream to brown. They are commonly known as Cod Worms but can also be found in other white fish such as Haddock.

I assume it's something they have when they are alive. They were brown against white, so quite easy to see. I did think the fish looke a bit mucky, but it was firm and fresh looking, so I skinned it before washing, so it wasn't so slimy. Kissykit does like her fish very well done, no 'juicyness' for her, but my stomach is still churning a bit. I'm so glad she didn't see them, she'd never touch any fish again. It will probably be a while before I fancy it though.
OH has just got back, with some frozen cod and a �10 gift voucher in compensation. Still doesn't solve the problem of me though. They are quite blase about it, son no2 is having sausages (he doesn't eat fish anyway), but I don't like those, so I think a piece of toast sounds about my level. I don't even feel like the vegs, and I've still got to cook anyway Wish I hadn't swapped with son no2 who should have been cooking today.

I used to be a fishmonger - I can assure you the worms in the cod are harmless, although a good fishmonger should have at least removed them. It also depends where the cod comes from as to whether it has worms - ie from round English waters they tend to be a bit wormy - Scottish less so (cleaner water and food). You also can find worms in other white fish, except Haddock and other bottom feeders

Never found worms in fish but once served up OH some pasta with tomato and caterpillar sauce.

I had heard about cod worms a long time ago so never eat it .

a friend of mine used to wrok in a chipy and told me about the worms in the fish. I didn't eat it for years...

yuk alert!!!

Mind you, I stepped on a slug once, I could feel the skin stretching and stretching, and then finally it popped [you know like when a car crash happens in slow motion, it was sort of like that, over in a millisecond, but it feels so much longer], I was wearing socks at the time, and I didn't eat sausages for years after that.
