I wore overalls like those for many many years; you've got to if you are going straight to the pub after spending 12 hours on a building site. Quick face wash, some perfume, strip overalls off and bang - ready for action.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Ah well. Here we go. although this thread is really about GW I see a few mentions of James Wong, the last of which has just finished. My own view (as a retired butcher) is that whilst it was very entertaining and certainly better presented than GW very few of his remedies and recipes hold up to a proper analysis. I know this is very emotive and Lady S thinks he is very cute but whilst I found it interesting some of the theories his ideas are based on are scientific twaddle.
Hold on. Before you send out the lynch mob. Much of it was based on sound theory and, even more, was good fun and couldn't hurt you but one in particular stood out tonight and that was nettle tea as a hay fever cure. He failed totally to point out that whilst the main irritant in nettles is formic acid (the stuff that those lovely ants use to bite you in far greater concentrations) that nettles also contain a rather nasty thing called histamine. Now histamine is the main cause of hay fever, which is why your doctor would prescribe ANTI-histamine to combat it. I was very worried about this until he added chamomile which is admitted even by red necked retired quacks to have very calming qualities on all parts of the body. I think that is why the 2 'guinea pigs' were not over enthusiastic about the nettle tea's affect on hay fever. The nettles possibly aggravated it (unless you take a Prince Charles homeopathic view) whilst the chamomile soothed it. I think you would be as well, or better, off just having a chamomile tisane.
Don't get me wrong for goodness sake. I think a few of his views were interesting, but a few were whacky as well. And for the person that is going to start yelling about herbs being used for thousands of years, I'll say it for you. That's why lots of people used to die young. The occasional remedy does work and I am sure that sea-weed scrubs etc. can do no harm as long as you take his advice on testing for allergies.
St. John's wort, which he is very fond of, is known, even in 'respectable' medical circles to have a useful effect against depression. But we know what drug it contains. In fact we know ALL the drugs it contains and there is nothing in it to cause any nasty reaction. So if you are feeling a bit low have either a cup of St. John's wort tisane or a cup of tea. Either will help. If you are feeling 'orribly low then see a sympathetic doctor (if you can find one nowadays). None of his remedies should actually hurt you but, to give him his due, he always says, 'Consult a doctor first.'Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

Just reviving to say that last night's was the worst GW I have ever seen. I shall be going to the pub on Friday nights whilst this series runs its course. I thought that my favourite presenter might have something useful to say about asparagus when I saw it advertised but I refuse to sit down to a bowl of Ophiopogon with hollandaise sauce. Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

It reminded me to go round and nick some ophiopogon from the tub that my sister never waters, before she kills 'em all!
Ok, Alys is decorative. You can't build a programme round that.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

In the July issue of Grow your own mag in the poll it says that Grow your own readers voted it top gardening programme!!! Guessing none of you guys voted for it.
I hate it so much now I do not watch it as it just annoys me, can't say why it just does, it is boring, follows the same old format and I am not a person prone to violent thoughts but every time I see Toby B I want to punch his lights out!!! Can't explain why, he is prob a really nice bloke but he just annoys the hell out of me. I think they ought to just have a totally different programme that shows gardening as it really is today and ditch this lame old format. When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown
