If this volcano is still active, would it be right to assume that the ash cloud is growing & will continue to do so until the eruption eases....... I don't understand how they are putting estimated timescales on flight times it if it's still active. Sorry can't find my scientist head.

Went down to the plot last night to water (I know - dubya tee eff right?) and it were chuffin freezin'. Spoke to a fellow allotmenter dude and he was talking about the ash 'blocking out the sun'. I looked north and saw an ominous looking cloud - honestly, if I'd have seen four horses at the front of it, they wouldn't have looked out of place.

Needless to say, a couple more trips back and forward to the tap and it'd dissipated and all was well with the world again.

Still bladdy cold though (I was in flip flops and 3/4 lengths, but I did have me hoodie on).

Isn't the initial pyroclastic cloud a result of the explosive eruption? - Once that has dissipated (I think I just used that word twice) the remaining 'flow' doesn't travel skyward.

Was watching CNN this morning and according to them wot know this stuff, apparently HW is about spot on.
There is now minimal stuff being spewed upwards due to the pressure having been released by the initial explosion.
All thats happening now is all the lava is heading down to the frozen ice to melt all that and flood everywhere further down.

So for a few delayed flights, most people dont really have it so bad.

Mr R has a similar winter wardrobe.

I have to be forcibly whittled out of my Ugg boots, and he's skittling around in sandals.

I can't tell if the sky looks ashy or just Sheffield-in-Spring colour. It's more or less the same I think.

It's amazin how much a Fairy liquid bottle and some red paint will cement a memory in your head.

I seem to remember some form of cork being involved too.

Isn't there a saying in Sheffield - if you can see a cloud rain is on it's way, if you can't, it's already raining. Summit like that anyways.

Off topic but I have an almost identical wardrobe to HW, and clearly Mr R, (although I'm guessing my 3/4 lengths would be short shorts on the big fella).

Yup- you're right- of course the ash cloud could continue - I think 'they' are waiting to see how fast the winds will blow it out of our local airspace so the planes can fly in the 'safe zones'.
The volcano could continue for weeks(That'll be interesting if the wind direction doesn't change!!!!)
Who knows if enough pressure has been released for now- it could just be the tip of the iceburg!!!

We were there about 5 years ago- and the American and European plates are pulling apart right down the centre (N/S) of Iceland- several cm per year.It has been quiet for rather a long time ya know!!

..and hmmm...I just tried to book my ferry for next weekend and the site is down- prob can't cope with the demand!!!!

To be honest, most 'normal' trews are 3/4 lengths for me.

Has no-one else seen any light aircraft flying the last couple of days? Another one just went over here.

They will be flying beneath the cloud .
