What would Vedder do?

I have a Jamie Oliver at Home cook book and the HughFW, River Cottage, Family cookbook.
Jamies recipes are lovely BUT the ingredients tend to put them out of our reach financially (despite what I thought was a fairly substantial herb and spice rack and a pretty well stocked storecupboard in my ktichen).
Hughs' book, on the other hand, is superb and really is a 'store cupboard' recipe book and I've tried several of his.

Never cared for Jamie, I find him a bit of a fool to be honest. I tried his vodka watermelon for a party when he did his first shows... didn't work the vodka just sat in the funnel for days. Pete's curry was ok but I have had better with less work too!! I do have some of his books but they mostly just sit on the shelf.
I don't care for Delia either... she never tastes anything , you can't cook without tasting things !
Really like Nigel Slater , his italian sausage pasta is great if you can get your hands on good Italian sausage, although I do think he is a bit heavy handed with the cream sometimes.
What about James Martin , I think he is a great cook. Pretty down to earth, no gimmics... but great results!

I've got to say though, something about him makes me crawl a little bit.
I'm not entirely sure what, because I can watch his shows, and I'd love his veg garden (even though he's "jealous" of allotment holders) - but I think it's something about the way he seems to - - - pause before using a really - - - gushy word about an ingredient.
I really do rate him - but there's that "something" that kinda spoils it a bit.

I am slooooowly converting to Jamie. It's only recently I have been able to watch him with the sound on... his voice really GRATES on my nerves.
But I am getting better
Got the Marakesh one taped, can't watch them with OH as cooking shows make him hungry lol
Got Delicious Miss dahl taped too, ditto the OH reason and to stop him drooling over her as well as her food lol
Love Nigella, do loads of her stuff.
Find Delia a bit too old school for me, and a bit patronising.
Love Hugh.
James Martin is a bit of a sexist whatsit, and a bit too smarmy so I find it hard to watch him... but can't watch that Worral Thompson guy cos he really makes my skin crawl. Sorry to anyone who likes, him just my opinion.
Loved Floyd.
Like that guy from Cornwall with the little dog.

I'm not a fan of Jamie Oliver, though I do have the courtesy to recall his name before disparaging him. I think his recipes are probably fine and he certainly did well with his school dinners campaign but he still isn't someone I'd want to sit down and dine with.
Nigel Slater, Hugh F-W and Gordon Ramsay though... tea and afters please (though that might be a bit one sided ).I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

I quite like Jamie Oliver but he did have a patch of being everywhere and doing everything, as had Gordon Ramsay at times, and then you reach saturation point with them! Or at least I did!
One of the things that I find terribly hypocritical about some of the big name chefs on telly, especially those that are on Channel 4, is that they did all that stuff about the £1 chickens in Tescos and all the cruelty of that YET will still happily serve up recipes with Fois Gras in it, which is one of the cruelest (and most unnecessary) methods of food production.
