I find that when I'm exercising and eating well, I don't even want to eat rubbish. I feel healthier, I sleep better, I have more energy ...

I motivated Mr TS by signing him up for a 50 mile charity cycle ride. He either had to lose a bit of weight & train for it, or look like a plonker ~ luckily, he's very competitive and he did amazingly well. He flew past me and this year he's going to better his time.
He's now got an app for his iPhone that shows his weight loss as a graph, and another that tracks his cycling times, distance, best speed, average speed etc. He does love his gadgets.

    • Mikey, split it up. Half your goal should be attainable in six months...half that and you have three months. April 2012 is a hell of a lot closer than Feb 2013!!!

I agree with both VC (daren't not ) and Ts...daren't not either ...prove them wrong, but also, once you get into it you'll want to keep going. The adrenaline buzz will become almost an addiction and crap food will start to taste crap.

      You go for it!!!

That's so true. In my early 20s I used to live on minty Aeros and Belgian Buns. Now they just taste of grease to me.
Your taste buds can and do change, and I believe it takes about 3 weeks for a new behaviour to become a habit ... so hopefully after a month of healthy eating you'll start to rediscover your taste buds and change your eating habits for good

Exercise though, is nearly always a chore. I hate doing it, and a lot of runners will tell you they hate going for a run, but they LOVE IT WHEN THEY STOP! Just get your kit on and get out before breakfast, get it over with for the day. The feel-good buzz will stay with you all day.

Next day: just get out and get it over with, again.

          • Well last night the exercise bike got it. I intended trying to do 1 1/2 hours but actually did 2. according to the machine I burn't 1,629 calories, and travelled 29.5 miles all uphill.

Hopefully it pays dividend on tonights weigh in.

Thank you for your comments, I'm doing my best to set smaller goals, I had a goal for my birthday in two weeks which I'm 6 pounds off, so probably won't get there. I've decided to set a goal for Easter, as we are going away for a few day, and a tentative goal for our summer hols in June.

Its going a bit slower than I'd hoped, I'm not a very patient man when it comes to weight loss. I've fought for most of my adult life with the scales. Even in my late teens, I was classed by the charts as borderline overweight, and I used to run 13 miles a day.

            • I'm sure you know best, Mikey, but didn't you have a bu&&ared knee recently? Don't go giving yourself an injury!

              • Yes, this is true di, I had reconstructive surgery, they recreated the tendons that hold my kneecap in place with strips taken from my hamstring. The scars are a bit gruesome, but my knee is now as good as new, although I can now kneel on a nail without feeling it.

                • At a realistic weight-loss rate, my real target will take at least a year, and unless I totally stop eating all the treats I don't lose weight AT ALL. Exercise will improve when the days get longer and warmer, so that will help. I'm not convinced that likes change in any realistic length of time. I regularly cut out luxury food items for 6 weeks at a time (Lent) but I still want them afterwards!
Mikey, MY boxes of chocolates have very few yucky ones (most of which appeal to OH) and consist mainly of OK ones!

                  • There was a very good programme on recent, 'Why aren't thin people fat', after watching it you would probably say to yourself why bother trying to lose weight, I'm only fighting the inevitable.

I would say, I'm definitely a fat man stuck in a dieting fat mans body.

Even though I'm on a diet, I've not stopped myself from having chocolate, or sweets, or anything else I fancy. I try to moderate it, and keep an eye on the quantity. I do tend to up the exercise level if my sweet tooth has been rampant. On the plus side by not picking late at night, I sleep much better.

                    • Weight is yo-yoing, up a couple of pounds one week down the next. I have a half-stone I am DETERMINED to lose by midsummer. I would like to lose most of it by Easter, but if I only manage half that I will just keep going.
If I can make real progress I will aim for a stone and a half by Christmas (but sure to put on at least 5lbs over that holiday).

                      • Three more pounds for me this week, and I got my club 10 last night. Also dropped a trouser size, I'm on a high today.

                            • Here we go, people - I'm emerging from Winter a bit on the wobbly side, so it's time to do something about it. I've taken up running (shock!) and although that has helped, I need to cut back on the food too, so out with the trusty Rosemary Conley...

                              • Well thats a realistic total for the time Hazel, I haven't started running yet. I've been exerting myself on the exercise bike instead, not quite so strenuous on my ageing joints.
