  • Sorry I am not as diligent a reporter as Hazel.

Still doing daily exercises plus a run every two days : back to over 20 miles a week after a brief dip below to mend tired muscles.

Calorific intake unchanged except for 18 cans of Stella on offer from Morrisons for £12 two weeks ago: (eek!)

Weighed myself at local NHS hospital whilst taking wife in for pre -op: 72kg clothed - BMI 24...

Amazing what running does - if your legs can stand it.
After lots of hamstring injuries over the years culminating in a very painful one last year, I have taken to doing yoga posture Downwards Dog 5 minutes a day to stretch my hamstrings. After 9 months my flexibility has improved but I still cannot get my heels on the ground..(Google the exercise : recommended)..

    • Just had a rant at myself and now I'm giving myself a good talking to. I have summer clothes, with labels still intact and I can't get in them. Really got to try now. Have lost about 4 lbs over the last 4 weeks, so have to find the resolve to lose more. Anyone seen any resolve anywhere?

If you find any, send some my way!

        • Just a quick update from me - I ran with 6,999 others in the Great Midlands Fun Run on Sunday, and lived to tell the tale! If you had told me in the New Year that I would be running an 8 1/2 mile race within six months, I would have laughed in your face!

          • Well done Hazel! I'm running 3 miles X 3 times a week and five on the weekend. Just checked the scales and I'm still lugging 15st 6lb around having only lost 1lb. Did my achilles tendon which knocked me back a bit and struggling to get to get to grips with my new Mizuna Wave Inspire running shoes which cripple me! May have to resort to my old tatty trainers.
Still aiming for the great north Run on 16th Sept sio reasonably happy with my progress.

8.5 miles is impressive........looking forward to getting up to that distance.

I MUST TRY HARDER TO LOSE HALF A STONE.........

              • Well done to you too Snadge, it must be really difficult to run when your shoes hurt. Couldn't somebody break them in for you? You're doing really well

I keep losing a couple of pounds and then finding them again MTH

                    • Well, things are looking up. I've just done my first 2hr run in about 20 years.......and I can still walk. Just worked out on google maps that I ran about 10 miles!
My scales were broken so I took the opportunity of weighing myself at my sons house and was pleasantly surprised I am now weighing 14st 11lb which is about a 10lb weight loss since I started running, without any dieting!
I do tend to stay away from carbs, but load up with them before and after a run. I've found Battenburgh cake is the way to go before a run, the marzipan gives me the energy early in the run then the carbs from the cake kick in later.

Training is more relaxed now on the lead up to The Great North Run on 16th Sept so I can wind down on the distance running and concentrate on upping my speed.

I've done three GNR's, the last about 15 years ago. 1hr 45min then 2hrs and the last one 2hrs 10 mins.
15 years on if I can break the 2hrs 30 mins I will be over the moon, but at my present rate I am realistically looking at 2Hrs 45mins. Luckily people usually get spurred on by the atmosphere..........so anything is possible!

I'm running for Crohn's and Colitus Uk. Two of my three offspring have Crohn's disease and one of them is running with me.
Was just going to hang up my running shoe's after the event because I have to take a double dose of ibruproven before each run to try and settle down my knee pains.

Had a change of heart though because I've been told 'fell running' doesn't afect your joints as badly so I'll invest in some cross trainers after the GNR and give that a try.

                            • Ibuprofen in any form is a Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) and in prolonged use is bad for your kidneys. I know, too much information for too much inflammation, but I had to issue the health warning Snadge. Having said that, have you tried the ibuprofen gel on your knees? I find that works for a few hours, but then, I don't run
