Starting next week after, pay day (not this week as we have a long weekend in Glasgow). I have unilaterally decided that OH and I are going to lose a stone each before Christmas, I am currently at least 1 1/2 stone overweight and he is *grmphmumblehmph* stones overweight.
We've both been quite successful with low carb but find it difficult to stick to as it requires a lot of planning, preparation and we often end up having potatoes/pasta as we haven't given enough thought to what "goes with" the main ingrediant - usually meat.
I'd like to know if anyone has any tips or recommendations for a good recipe book or just general advice on how to stay low carb - especially for "goes withs" -( I have the Atkins recipe book but find it a bit of a faff and also I like pictures for inspiration).
Plot, we had to swap to a low carb lifestyle when the BH was diagnosed as T2 Diabetic.
I don't know if you eat broccoli but it's a great potato/rice/pasta sub. This evening we're having chicken korma with steamed broccoli florets - it's surprisingly good.
Also you can do a lot with cauliflower - I hate the stuff but I will eat this willingly;
You can flavour it to suit your meal; so BBQ seasoning with chili con carne or ginger & chilli powder for Thai dishes, basil for pasta dishes or just season it with salt & pepper or garlic. I think I put the recipe in this thread too, and there lots of other great recipes as well.
Hello! I'd forgotten about this thread. I've been doing SW since June and have shed 8 kgs. Love the recipe books - got a load second hand from Amazon. It's a diet I can stick to as you get to eat everything. If I can't have my meat and carbs I turn into a rabid beast. I did WW a couple of years ago - very healthy and all but I was hungry all the time. Now, we do SW in the week and eat what we want at the week-end. I have to say the recipes are so good and varied. They even have a book all about curries...... yum!
IA couple of weeks ago OH was told by the weight management scheme he is now on that he needed to keep a food diary, complete with times, moods etc, as well as exactly what he ate. The dietician suggested he should use a book that would fit in his pocket, all I can say is, he would have needed a very large pocket
Anyway, I had the idea to search for an app for his phone, as he does carry that around most of the time. I found MyFitnessPal as an app that allows you to log the food and exercise you do, as well as having note sections for each day. There is also a website, whihc can be easier to use than the app, but both are brilliant. The app even supports barcode reading if you have one of these installed on your phone, so you can scan food and easily add it to your diary.
Since joining up I've lost 7.5lb, kissykit has lost 7lb, and OH has lost 6.5lb. I cancelled my ww online subscription, as MyFitnessPal is free, and also I realised eating the free foods on ww was costing me a lot of calories. I'm expecting weight loss to slow down now the 'water weight' has gone, but it's still weight my body isn't lugging around.
OH has told some of the people in the weight management group and they have signed up too. He can print off his diary as well, so he can take it along for the dietician to peruse.
There can be an element of social networking if your want, once you become friends with someone you can choose what you want to share.
I thought I'd post this info in case any of you would like to take a look. We are finding it very useful even though some of the entries in the database have been put on by other members, US figures are in cups, and some other entries look to be unlikely, but it seems close enough to be giving results and making us aware everything we eat contains calories.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
Now a little Shrinking Violet.
KK and I use My Fitness Pal and, I agree 'tis very good. I also have a fitbit pedometer (well, it's more than a pedometer but, you know what I mean)
I have lost about 10 pounds since I started on it (beginning of August) As you say, It's good to see what you've eaten every day and the entering does get easier. Helped us a lot.

Well I'm 4 1/2 weeks into my SW diet,a nd have lost 1 stone so far, I have good days and really bad days, but I'm trying not to beat myself up over the bad days. I really need to sort out the fridge and fill it up with snacks that are free, as opposed to cheese, or bread, or chocolate.
Its deadly having a family who are not on diets around you, as they don't stop putting temptation hidden away at the back of the cupboards where you'll find it on a ravenous hunt.
I just tried to sign up to MyFitnessPal and every user name I tried had already been taken (even veggiechicken!) I even tried Welsh words.............
I had to put a different number at the end of my username a couple of times but I got one that worked in the end. Makes you wonder how many Scarey people there are on there

Reason: Just re-read and realised that I didn't finish my sentence - D'oh!

I like this MyFitness thingy (after half a day of it!). It is making me own up to what I'm eating and think twice about it. I was a bit worried that I didn't have enough calories left for my evening meal - so I'm chuffed to find that, having done an afternoon of gardening, I have more calories now than I started the day with
Thanks BS and Scarey for the encouragement
I use the tools in the MyFitness thingy. The recipe calculator is good - I can work out how many carbs are in recipes before I give them to the BH and pop his blood sugar levels through the roof. Very handy if you need to tweak a recipe or you're creating your own.
