    • Seems to be working well for you, Darce. If you want to eat low carb fruit - lots of sugar in fruit - go for berries. A little bowl of full fat greek yoghurt and a handful of berries is very filling and low carb.

Anything that proclaims itself 'low fat' or 'fat free' will be loaded with carbs, full fat is better. Fat does not make you fat and if you're going low carb then you need to replace carbs with fat for energy.

        • If you're suffering sweet cravings, you might want to try taking Gymnema Sylvestra supplements. They really work cutting out the cravings for sweet stuff, as well as regulating your blood sugar levels (for diabetics) Look it up, see what you think about it. I bought mine from Am@zon.

Serious lowcarbers lose the cravings for sweet stuff naturally. I needed help because, for years, 'my time' was bedtime with a good book and shedloads of sweets. I have great difficulty reading a book without snacking. I really ought to go back to the Gymnema - it's just sitting out there in the kitchen - and lose some of half a stone I've gained this year.

          • Yeah the first two days was really really hard I think the sweet craving may have come from cutting out tea although I take sweeteners it's still sweet :/

It does state to stop using that 2 weeks before surgery though

              • Got on the scales the other day, and since getting a dog I have gained 1st. However I don't think its fat, I'm still in the same trousers and on the same buckle. I'm only guessing its muscle as I'm out for between 1.5-3 hours a day.

Missus isn't happy though, she did lighter life and lost about 4 st, and is now holding stable. She says I should be losing weight, but I need to stop eating us out of house and home. I can't help it, my appetite is huge these days. I still only have 3 meals a day, but I have about an further 12 snacks. Tea and biscuits, crisps, chocolate, ham, cheese, in fact anything not tied down in the fridge.

I know I should really be upping my carb and protein intake to kerb some of the additional hunger pangs, but that takes organisation and not something I do with food. I'm generally a spur of the moment eater.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

                • Muscle is heavier than fat, Mikey. I bet if you'd had thigh measurements from before becoming a dog owner and now, you'd probably see a difference.

                  • I just checked Jules, and they have gone down by 2 inches?!!, though the calf has gone up.

I've always had large thighs though, a side effect from long distance cycling from the age of 10. By age 17 my thigh measurement was larger than my waist. Unfortunately my waistline these days exceeds my thighs....., and would be classed somewhere between obese and clinically obese.

I don't feel unfit though and take very little notice of the scales, I'd like to drop about 3 inches from the waist, but more to make life easier shopping than any personal vanity. It can be a real pain shopping when you stop being 'normal'... though normality and shop clothing racks seem to be catching up with me these days, which is more shocking.

                    • Out of the snacks you mentioned; drop everything but the ham & cheese. Everything else was pure carbohydrate and very fattening.

If you snack on high protein, low carb, foods such as cheese, ham, meats, cream cheese & celery, you'll feel fuller for longer and won't need to snack. But the more carbohydrates you consume, the more you'll crave. Carbs are addictive - I'm proof here - I've put on half a stone since last Christmas and the only high carb thing I have been eating is ice cream.

Now, I really ought to put my money where my mouth is and stop eating carbs again. It's easy enough to gain weight with hypothyroidism but ten times as difficult to lose it!

As an added thought - my mother was complaining that their dog is getting fat, despite two long walks, ball fetching etc, every day. It occurs to me now that the dog always has dog food mixed with biscuit - are dog mixer biscuit things high carb?

                        • No idea Jules, my dog borders on skinny!!, he's a 7 month Springer Spanial and very lovely. Here he's been tucked in by DD.

I've tried a lot of diets over the years High carb, High protein, low fat, low cholesterol and they've all failed because they all require me to change my eating habits, and I can do it for a time, but eventually I revert to type. I believe we have a chip in our heads that tell us when to eat and when to stop. You can control it for a while but you can't remove it. As a non smoker I can only assume its like smoking, something constantly nagging you, eat, your not full.

This sounds very pessimistic I know, but sometimes accepting what we are is harder I'm sure. When I was around 20, I got down to what the statisticians would call 'normal' for my height and frame, to get there I had been running 13 miles a day for a little over a year.

I can't do that anymore I have too much metalwork in my legs, but walking is ok and having the dog is great. What I need to do is create a bit more balance in my eating which is a lot harder now I work from home than when I went out to work. I'm sure I'll find a balance for my body in a month or two but at the moment I'm not there and the constant craving is a pain.

I think a food diary would probably help, I think I'll start one tomorrow.

                            • The thing is Mikey, it has to be more a way of life than a diet. But you are so right, it is incredibly hard not to revert to type - and that's just what I've done.

Got to stop though because I do feel much less healthy and I have no energy. And yet, the carbs I'm eating would normally be considered healthy (not including the dreaded ice cream - which I've stopped) brown wholegrain bread, jacket potatoes, porridge. I'm going to have to stop eating all of them because they are doing me no good.

Time to start low carb baking again!

                              • Just want a quick rant at myself. Been doing really well on low-carb then went and blew it! OH had been away for the weekend and I wasn't expecting him back till this morning but he got home early and my no-drink weekend ended up in a wine binge which led to a hangover induced carb-fest today. 2 slices toast, breakfast turnover on way to work (puff pastry with sausage egg and bacon) and a sausage roll for lunch PLUS bottle of Ribena and bottle of Fanta. Aaaargh.
