The best game in the whole wide world RUGBY was first played and invented here, Tom Brown's school days, Gilbert rugby balls used for all the major matches.Last edited by miffy; 22-04-2010, 10:08 PM.When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown

The local Steam Railway museum was on Blue Peter when they moved a Signal Box from Derbyshire to the Churnet Valley Railway whole. The Railway was also used for the Jenifer Saunders/Dawn French/Ade Edmunson/Ben Elton (when he was still a comedian and before he sold out to make crappy musicals) BBC series Happy Families. Peter Howitt the original Joey Boswell and writer/Director of Sliding Doors used to live here. The local Flint Mill recently appeared on Industrial Revelations on Quest TV. Eric Bristow the ex world darts champion/wife beater owns a pub in a nearby town.

World's first industrial city.
Morrissey (a hundred thousand apologies and if there's anything we can do to make it up to you we'll be more than happy).
Manchester United (and City of course).
Bernard Manning (sorry again).
The Stone Roses.
The Happy Mondays.
Discovery of the electron.
First stored-program computer.
Robert Peel.
Free Trade.
Repeal of the corn laws. (largely came from these parts, though I'm sure not exclusively)
Peterloo Massacre.
Chartism.
Cotton.
So other than the minor blips with some of our less proud moments (Morrissey for one) - quite a lot really.
Not much of that will be news to anyone though.
