  • Taking bags to the supermarket...

My mum is an avid member of the "bring your own bag" brigade. So much so that when she visits she often brings some sort of Hessian carrier to suggest I might do the same.
The first time she brought a little number with ladybirds and flowers on, so I pointed out that there's almost no way a gent like me is going to carry that down to the local supermarket (especially down my street!).
Last time she brought me a considerably manlier one, but as I went out to Tesco just now I looked at it and realised it's not the look of the bag, it's just the notion of taking my own.

I don't want to offend any grapes who do take their own bags, but there seems to be something inherently feminine about the idea. Perhaps it's the handbag-esquery of it, or perhaps it's the fact that walking with an empty bag that won't fold up into your pocket goes against man-logic.

Am I alone or are there other grapes (mainly male, but we do respect that females have opinions too ) out there who have this problem?

How about these? Man Bags :: Twistedtwee

But I know what you mean - my OH isn't too keen on taking bags with him either. He can be persuaded to take a couple of pocketfuls of scrunched up carrier bags though

I'm used to seeing loads of blokes with them, and this is Sheffield... totally the norm in our area. I'd go as far as saying that I definately see as many blokes with the reusable bags, as women.

It's good when you take Morrisons bags to Tescos and claim the recycle points for using your own bags.

You'd best post that on the What's Your Area Famous For, Rhona! You're quite right though, I too see loads of men with shopping bags. My SIL has a couple of balls (plastic variety) that turn into bags. What about that Ollie? Waits with bated breath for comment.

OH does the shopping, I'm usually at home to put it away, and make sure bags are put in the car ready for the next trip. Problem is, they usually stay there, and then I have to clear the car out. He 'says' he just forgets to take them in with him but.....

How about these - got one for my mum: The Original 'Onya'

They come in bloke colours and scrunch up into a tiny bag with a climbing style clip. Sort of a bit camping/gadgety rather than girly.

Just bung them in a hold all. It's a carry bag I really couldn't care what's on it as long as it does the job and I use the bag for life ones and they have some of the oddest pics on them at times.

I'm old enough to remember when you had to take your own bags.

Don't use supermarkets but always carry my own bags about but they're cotton ones which you can shove in a pocket. OH has a COOP one (I think) in the side door of his car, they're much easier to carry, don't dig in like the plastic ones and you avoid unnecessary packaging. Don't understand why they'd be male or female, seems a strange concept to me.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Do you know...I'd never really given it that much thought, but now you come to mention it,most of the 'Bags for Life' bags I've accumulated over time have got a distinctive feminine feel to them...patterned with butterflies or flowers or such.

I can't remember if it was on here or not but I saw a link within the last few days of some man styled shopping bags.
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

It's rucksacks for me. Probably not so useful post-surgery, Ollie, but they do the job nicely.

I agree that most of the bag for life type efforts are a bit femenine.

I'll be getting a rear rack for my bike tomorrow so soone enough everything will be going into panniers or a wooden crate on the back and in that case the look and feel of the bag doesn't bother me. It'll be strapped to the box/rack on the way there, chucked into a basket or trolley when I arrive and then back on the back of the bike when I leave.

Mr Z has no qualms about taking the big bags for life that we have. I'm not going to mention that other chaps find it difficult. It just means that he grabs a trolley as soon as he is out of the car, hangs them on and that's it - full steam ahead.

If he had to carry them around before getting to the shops - then it would be a different matter.
