I am sure I went to the Fairy Glen when I was little, though I dont remember going to the Isle of Skye.

There was this place that I thought was Fairy Glen / something to do with Hans Christian Anderson that was absolutely magical with all kiddie's statues and gnomes and things in it...I cant quite recall, I would have only been about 4 but it was magical going to Scotland.

We love having holidays or long weekends away in the UK but it can be very expensive, the roads are often a nightmare, and the weather can be unreliable. I've been to quite a few places in the UK and love it here, we are very blessed.

That said, I still want to see as much of the rest of the world as I can afford...I know its not good for the environment but I like seeing new places and cultures.

I can hardly believe I am saying this but I seem to have outgrown holidays. A few years back we were always adventurous. Even in advancing years we have sort of backpacked in India, Malaysia,Australia and Thailand. For me it was the challenge of doing something new. Today, with limited endurance we find it difficult and the alternative of Tenerife doesn't appeal so we play scrabble in the garden. I still yearn for those days but OH is content.

I have 2 things against holidaying in Britain, the cost and the weather. If I thought I only had one week in this country and it rained every single day as happens regularly in our summer, I would be mightily peeved off!
It is also really expensive to holiday in this country. We have just booked 10 days in Turkey and it is almost the same ammount as a week in a static caravan in Norfolk.
        No contest for me.
I like to save my holidays for abroad and have weekends away in this country.

I can understand what you're saying about the weather, but I suppose it depends what you want from your holiday.
If you want hot sunshine and sitting on the beach, theen you're much better off going abroad.
We like to go to old castles, and walking and exploring.

With costs, I cant agree with you about it being so expensive to holiday here - eg last time we went abroad for one week it cost us nearly £2000 for all of us,(not including spendies) however if we go in the UK it costs at most £500 for a week (again not including spendies) AND we dont need health insurance, or to suffer the herrendous stress of airports etc....I am sure other vine members who like camping for instance, can cut the cost even more...

The cost argument does irritate me somewhat.

I agree! I burn at the merest hint of a sunbeam - for me, going abroad would be a waste of money, as I'd have to sit in shade with total sunblock and a t-shirt on all day!!

Saying that, in September 09, we were in Perthshire, and were in shorts and t-shirts every day it was that hot!! We ate tea sat outside every night and I got actual sunburn in Scotland

I'm happy to pay £400-500 for a week in this country frankly. Couldn't afford much more than that, plus kennel fees for my boys. A weeks camping in the New Forest is going to cost us under £160 for the pitch, then it's just food and spends

For 5 of us (all of the kids too old for 'free child' places) the cost of leaving the country for holidays is waaay beyond out budget. We tend to have a holiday cottage at Easter, when it costs less than £400 for a week. April is generally the driest/sunniest month in Wales, so it works out well

                  Lovely!

We're planning on camping at the moment, as it's quite hard to find a decent cottage that allows dogs (without charging ridiculous prices for them to stay). Have found a lovely campsite, so just need to decide exactly when we're going and book!

The only time I have been abroad was on honeymoon, the first time to Benidorm in February for five days, the second time to Paris in April for five days.
We always holiday at home and wait to see if the weather looks to be dryish then go camping, we book for a couple of nights then see what the weather is doing, if too wet we come home. Mostly Cornwall ( Bude ) or Dorset. This year cos of the grapestock hopefully Yorkshire.
As we live in Devon we dont have to go far to the beach ( 6 miles ) or Dartmoor again 6 miles depending how far across the moors we go. I would like to buy a caravan as I am getting too old to lie on a blow up mattress that usually ends up flat lol.

it does seem expensive to holiday in UK, and the weather is usually awful: however, sitting on a beach turning lobster red doesn't appeal to me. I'd much rather ramble around our countryside & enjoy our own pub grub/real ales. It must be my age

We like a spot of surfing, different cultures, languages and food so love travelling and we usually go abroad at least once a year. That's not to say we haven't had great holidays here.

It's being debated at the moment - want to go away in June. With a two year old, and a baby, we need two travel cots, a double pushchair, and loads more, so we're coming around to the idea of a holiday in the UK, at least for this year. The thought of all that lot, the babies, and a couple of surfboards in an airport, hoping that we've booked a big enough hire car, isn't THAT appealing.

We're thinking Pembrokeshire, Devon or Isle of Skye (and that was before I saw BM's post!). Or driving to France and avoiding the flight. Oh I dunno. We can't decide.

We are very lucky to live so near the Peak District - one of the things which drew us here. 10 minutes to Stanage Edge can't be argued with

We never go abroad to sit on the beach! It would drive OH bonkers! We go to warm places where there are LOADS of interesting things to see such as South of France (Carcasonne), Barcelona, Rome, Prague (in the summer), Crete. Next trip is Turquoise Coast of Turkey in June, so not silly hot. After that we are planning a spring break to Marrakesh. I have a far better time when I am not slopping about in wellies and a cagoul freezing my nuts off.
The weather in this country is just too unpredictable and if it is warm it's horribly humid and muggy.
