Just had a quick search on the situation in Argentina - and it has a lot to do with the amount they export for the income. However I did find a sensible piece of advice in amongst some more colourful (or should I say colorful) discussions about food shortages:

Write down exactly how much of each food your family needs for a week, then put aside a 6-12 month supply just in case. You’ll end up eating it anyway, just remember the two most important Rs of food stockpiling: Rotate and Restock.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I think seeing how much we rely on importing food is quite scary, especially when we ship the exact same stuff out sometimes!!

I think this country would be a better place if it were more self sufficient, not just us growing our own, but the government making sure that we use what bounty we have at home before looking abroad.

My mum sometimes goes on about a total collapse and having to go back to our roots.... It could happen and probably will do one day, humans in general are too greedy and are a horrible plauge on the earth, taking what they want and spreading into every corner, I reckon mother nature will give us all a good what for at some point! personally hated it when she would go on about ww3, I had nightmares as a child because of that, hasn't happened yet and I hope it wont in my time

I think the owner of the Grapestock site might have something to say about everyone permanently moving there and building massive perimeter fences.

Although it does have a water supply and plenty of rabbits....

Perhaps we need to have a network of enclaves across the country, and then we could support each other, and swap seeds to keep the gene-pools diverse

Why worry ... the world is going to end in 2012 anyway

Seriously though, there are so many conspiracy theories threatening the end of the world as we know it. I personally know alot of conspiracy theorists (despite not believing a single one of their theories) as I used to be quite involved in so called "alternative" ways of life. I dont think any of them should be listened to and if you do your going to end up in a serious depression so scared of everything.

The sensible way forward would be to make sure you always have a good supply tins etc in the house in case of emergency (we had to use ours when we were snowed in, so always useful) and try to be as self sufficient as possible. Grow as much food as possible and if you have the time and space then some livestock etc. If not make friends with a local farmer and they are usually more than happy to share what they have.

As far as I know, you don't need to shoot mushrooms......

Who said anything about shooting mushrooms ? I will be shooting rabbits, pigeons and anything else i can kill to eat. What we as man has done since millenia.. So you can keep your prat comments to yourself. There not constructive. If you have nothing good to offer, do not offer your ignorance as a substitute.

Thanks to all the people who gave good suggestions (appreciated) and many many thanks to all the people who couldnt resist filling the thread with nonsensical posts..

I happen to agree with Jax.

We have enough food to feed us for about 3 weeks - boring food but food.. We rotate the stock..

So if bad things do happen , we can easily stock up to hold 3 months.. Power is the problem .. and heating..

                            Still we have candles..

If things do get bad, anyone growing their own is likely to be killed or seriously injured if they are anywhere near other people. Desperate people do desperate things.

So if you do have lots of food and everyone else is starving, share with your neighbours and look hungry is my view.

You're talking about me, aren't you, I know that you are, I knew someone would eventually. It happens everywhere I go, always someone talking about me. First it was the government, then the aliens started listening to my phone calls. Now I find out about this conspiracy to end world order, a few years ago I thought it was the illuminutti, now I find it's being run by a bloke in a submarine off the coast of Siberia!
I'm going to buy lots of tins of baked beans and lock the door..... further thinking reveals I might want to open a window.
