Hi Folks,

Went down to try and sort my Dad's PC out today without success, can anyone help?

Problem is you cannot access web pages from 3 different browsers, web site unavailable is the general message you get.

I know the internet connection is working because I could do windows updates and update his symantec definition file.

I've tried various system restores from different dates but the problem still exists.

I switched off the firewall but the problem still exists.

Was thinking of reinstalling different browsers and trying again but apart from reinstalling windows does anyone have any ideas?

It it XP? If so, launch a command window ( Sart - Run - type 'cmd' without the quotes - click OK). Type 'ping Google' and post back what you get.

Try installing Google chrome...that's what I have for my main search engine, I also have internet explorer as a back up, it sound's like all the program's have been lost...as in search facility's, give it a go...you've got nothing to loose.

Yes gonna try that. Obviously I couldn't get a browser working to do it there and then so will take them down on a memory stick next week

Looks like DNS resolution is okay then, some anti virus can be configured to block all internet access, could this have happen here!

Asking my Dad what he did/didn't do was like pulling my teeth out

I might have to remove and reinstall symantec, process of elimination really.

do you know who is ISP is (broadband supplier) and the name of the local exchange, it possible their is an outage at that end, if you let us know we could look up if their are any issues, don't want you to rebuild the machine if its not faulty

It's sky but it stopped working about a week ago so it's an issue on the PC. As I said I can ping and update symantec so I know the internet connection is working??? It's bizarre

check to see if 'work offline' is ticked in any browser.

Yep I have the same issue with Mother Dear , have you tried turning off the router for 15 minutes, it maybe a stale session or can you try another computer.

What is it about Parents and Pootas?

My Dad is self-taught. He started six years ago, and can send/receive emails, but still doesn't understand basics like copy/paste and drag/drop!

Now, to make matters worse, he's decided to copy me and get a Mac, so we'll have to start aaaaaall oooooover agaaaaaaain! GRRRRR

It was only a fleeting visit today, gonna pop down later in the week with my netbook and various software on the memory stick to try some more.

Does seem strange, all 3 browsers not working.

How is your Dad's computer connected to the internet? Is there a router involved? Wired or wireless?

If you could open up a command prompt, do an "ipconfig /all" and post the result that may give a clue.
