I was just wondering what the most inspired re-use of a non gardening item for growing was. I am using an old swing seat frame that died last year as an A frame to grow my beans, the gas heater that died( the type you put a gas bottle in) I have turned over and am using as a planter- give it a month and it will be covered by my petunias, the seat from the swing seat has been used as an apex for my bodged covered seat in the veg gdn and is being overtaken with jasmine and the old washing machine drum has fennel and crocosmia in it - loving the second and FREE use !

The old sound proof printer boxe from work made a brilliant propagator. Lined with foam and a perspex lid on it.

We used a metal bed base as a temporary frame for a Honeysuckle to grow up,

26 years later we're still using it

I'm using an old shoe rack that I've put troughs in to plant strawbs and grow salad leaves.

I have piched your bedframe idea- we put fleece over it for a cloche last year but i have just upended it against the wall in a gap between two shrubs and staked it in and put some of the husbands hops there, thanks for that!

I had a consatina (sp) shower screen that is the perfect size of one of my beds. It is now secured to the bed & makes a brilliant coldframe lid to bring on the bairns.

I have an old fashioned 60s headboard made of cane that is going against the fence and hopefully it will look pretty with peas growing up all over it.

A frame from a garden swing chair thingy now used as a bean climber.
Old basketball hoop with twine up it as a tall bean climber.
Piece of drainpipe as a comfrey tube.

Not so much recycling as double use. We had to make our own dog-guard for the car (the car has some unusual features), which we only ever use when we go abroad with the dogs at Christmas. In summer it becomes a plant support (sometimes for the tomatoes, last year for runner beans)
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

An old caravan placed at the top of my allotment before the permanent stuff went in is the perfect shed. The loo/bathroom is a tool store and it has guttering to collect rainwater and i get to shelter from the rain.....Didnt go down well with some of the existing plotholders but 5 yrs later they are used to it. Have also got an A frame going free in the Swindon area to anyone who wants it. Would make a great fruit cage

I like the inspiration from this thread!

The only thing I have used so far is very uninspiritational (is that a word) but is recycling nonetheless, and is one of those big Ikea bags for my tatties.

And an old unwanted hutch that is no use to bunnies but great for using as a table for doing potting-on.
