The stupid things you do sometimes

Ive got a very big (17hh) horse with something of a thing about having her feet done. To the point where a couple of farriers have refused to touch her. So i have to trim them myself (not shoe obviously, that's illegal) I've had lots of practice over the years having been shown how many years ago when I bred shetlands ponies. And she is reasonably good for me nowadays, although there were some very hairy times with her at first.
But wouldn't you think I would know better than to try to do her tonight when I was alone at the buildings She tried to pull her foot away when it was resting over my knee, so I told her to 'quit it stupid'. A few minutes later she reared up, taking her foot out of my hands, slamming the file across my fingers and knocking me on my back on the concrete yard. As horse files are about 18" long 1/4 inch thick and an inch wide, they are quite solid. So I now have a right hand thumbnail which is black, with a huge chunk missing from the nailbed, and very badly bruised shins and legs, where she caught them with her hooves as she went up.
Dammit I should (and do) know better so why?
Anyone else done something they should have known not to and suffered for it?

Sorry Hilly, hope you're OK, sounds very sore. I decided to be lazy once, and lead my very placid horse out to the paddock whilst wearing only slip-on loafers. This was the one day something spooked him and he landed on my foot!

Also, one unexpectedly warm sunny day, I decided to take rugs off the horses whilst out in the field. Mine was fine, just stood there like a poppet. Little cob on the other hand let me undo half the straps then went for it. Round and round the paddock like a racehorse, in blind panic with rug wrapped around his back legs. He eventually stopped when the rug finally disintegrated about half an hour later.

Pulling my jacket from back seat of car through the gap between front seats, pulling pulling pulling when I noticed the toggle (at end of shock cord) had got stuck and was at full stretch.......I could not think it before it happened.....boing! it had freed itself, came whistling through the gap and hit me straight in the mouth. I had numb lips for ages and looked like that Princess in Star Wars with the little red lips 'Leah' was it? tell you what.....it made my eyes water. have to say it was all Mr HF could do not to laugh. He just looked at me and said "does it hurt" not much it did. !!!@@@***@@@!!!
I was lucky not to loose my front teeth!
Daft thing is .....I have been so close to doing it again and again and again - different jackets each time! might cut the cords off them all!!!!!!

Mine's a horse related one too...
I used to exercise someones little competition horse for her (15HH). The owner hated doing flatwork and I hated jumping, so the two of us combined were making this mare (Echo) quite nice and supple.

Anyhoo, one day I decided I'd take Echo into the school, and after a good warm-up, I thought I'd try doing some trotting poles with her (on my own). The latch on the gate into the school was very stiff, so I hadn't been able to secure it properly behind us, but it was closed-to.

I dismounted, ran the stirrups up the leathers and popped the rein behind.

No sooner had I turned my back, and the little minx had got herself over to the gate, pulled it open and was legging it full-tilt towards her field (1/2 a mile away down a private lane)!! Luckily someone coming the other way managed turn her back towards the stable yard while I chased after, shouting 'loose horse!!'. She was none-the -worse-for-wear, but I was so mortified, I never rode her again.

After cooking sausages I poured the fat into a jar so it could be thrown away. DO NOT under any circumstances hold the jar with the other hand. Hot fat burns like a b@$£@rd.
Trip to casualty, gas and air while an all-in- wrestler tugged my wedding ring off and then trips to burns clinic until better. And I had the embarrassment of having to wear this blue glove over my hand .

driving in car and suddenly decide to clean of the milage display window, by putting my hand through steering wheel, whilst on a bendy road. took a few seconds to engage my brain as i turned the steering wheel and felt an obstruction... how stupid is that????

When ironing, if you 'rest' the iron up on end, DO NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES look away as you go to pick it up!
In my defence I can claim that it was in a school sewing leson (pressin seams open) and the fool of a teacher spoke to me at the wrong moment.
3 weeks with no writing.. (some compensation......)

Well I've broken the end bone of my thumb, the one under the nail. And its my right hand of course. Fortunately the joint is ok. You wouldn't believe how much you use your thumb till you cant. So what did I do to follow up on my stupidity...only tried to do up my bra myself...go on girls try it OOOWWWW.
Err, the blokes can too if they really want..but dont blame me if your missus catches you wearing their bra.
