  • What a captivating speaker!

I keep meaning to post this, but events overtook me, however...

Last Tuesday we went to a Garden Society talk. The speaker was Steve Edney, Head Gardener at The Salutation near Sandwich in Kent. The Secret Gardens of Sandwich | Meet Our Gardeners | Sandwich | Kent

My goodness, he was fascinating. He's brought this garden back from a ruin in five years, and he had to compress all that work into an hour and a half's talk for us, no mean feat.

Now normally, after an hour, I'm fidgiting in my plastic chair and desperate for a cup of tea, but not so this time. I could have listened to him talk about his garden for hours. Its wonderful to hear somebody talk about something they are genuinely passionate about, and when that is gardening, its doubley wonderful.

We're going to visit the gardens as a group at the end of June. Before the talk I was a bit 'blah' about it (sorry! ), but now I can't wait to go!

If the media ever get hold of this guy, he'll give Matthew Wilson a run for his money on the 'dish' stakes too!! (The piccy on the website doesn't do him justice)

Believe me, you'd forgive him for having facial hair

I have nothing against facial hair, as long as it's nicely clipped - no room for nesting birds...

He's supposed to be on-site unofficially when we visit(we'd have to pay extra for an official Guided Tour), so I'll see if I can get a better piccy shall I girls?

An exciting update to this thread:

I've just stumbled across a tv programme called 'Country Lives' on the Travel and Living Channel (Sky 265)...and blow me down with a feather...there was Chris Beardshaw talking to Steve Edney about the garden at the Salutation! It's being repeated at 10.30 this morning. Hope some of you manage to catch it!!
