    Madderbat's patent cold cure(s)

No 1 Chicken soup cures everything. See the recipes section and add garlic to help it along - it works.

No 2 lemon and honey - yes, but you've all forgotten the spices.

Take 3 cloves, 1 small piece of cinnamon stick, 1.2" root ginger sliced. put into a pan with 1/2 pint water, and bring to boil. Boil then simmer for 10-15 minutes.
Strain into a mug, add juice of 1/4 lemon, 1 shot(s) of whiskey and tablespoon honey, stir and sprinkle a little pinch ground cinnamon on top.

Repeat if necessary until slumber occurs.

There is also the Scottish cure which involves a bonnet, a bottle and a four poster bed .... put the bonnet at the end of the bed, climb in and drink the whisky until the bonnet moves!

No 3: make some cheese on toast, using 1 whole clove of garlic chopped, covered with cheese and toasted per slice of toast. About three of these and you will feel fine. Colleagues may refuse to work with you next day thought (It really happened to me once!)

Hope you feel better soon x

The one and only time the ex Mrs Rat had the flu, we were climbing in Glencoe in the depths of winter. She swore by the hot toddies that they made her in The Clachaig (the pub) - mind you she did have about 20 or so during the course of the evening
Not sure if she still had the flu or just didn't care any more

If she managed to work her way along the full set of whiskys in The Clachaig then she'd have certainly forgotten about her cold

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My OH always makes me a good potion when I've got a cold - I think it consists of:

              - boiling water poured into a mug
              - add a teaspoon of honey
              - squeeze in half a lemon or a lime
              - grate in some fresh ginger

mix it all up and drink the lot - it's yummy!

An old remedy for a cough which someone informed me of last week is to steep a neep overnight in water, remove the neep, then drink the water. Apparently awful, but works a treat!

Thats nearly as bad as piglets recipe for salsify! I think it was where you used bricks to hold it down while it cooked then threw the salsify away and ate the bricks if I remember correctly!

Jennie, Been thinking about your steeped neep water - I think it probably works on the principle that you will make an immediate and miraculous recovery if you are told that the only medicine available is the "eau de steeped neep"

My late Dad swore by a big bowl full of freshly boiled onion with butter, pepper and salt.

He never seemed to get many coughs or colds.
