nephew at hospital

Got a call yesterday, my nephew who will be two in September was bit by the family dog yesterday
My sister was chatting to her neighbour whilst my nephew was is neighbours garden with her 13 year old grand daughter dogs were in their own garden, nephew screams they run out to discover Corey with blood all over his face, grand daughter said that the brown dog, Tess had bit him.

Sister takes him to hospital and had it dressed, some confusion as to if it was a bit or she had scratched it open jumping up at fence.
Had to go to Brirmingham Childrens Hospital this morning given anesthetic so they could have a better look as since flap on cheek, had ten stitches in a Y shape, now Docs reckon it was a bit, Corey fine has found a fish tank on the ward and has eaten his lunch at the hospital should get out this afternoon, both dogs going to an uncles house today.
Sister thinks he may keep Tes as she doesn't feel she can trust her around Corey again.

Its times like this I wished they lived closer, mum going down in Wednesday for a week, a trip that had already been arranged before this happened.

You read such stories about dogs mauling children, makes me shudder at the thought.

Terrible news & I bet the dog is placid most of the time. Its awful when you hear such stories especially when the attack is to the face. I hope it heals ok.

The dog is a rescue dog that they have had for years, before Corey came along usually very placid, puts up with Corey pulling at her ears and tail and normally gets up and walks away when she has had enough, its odd as the fence was between them, its unclear just now if she jumped the fence or he had his face up at the fence, sis hasn't had the time to speak to her neighbour again to see what the granddaughter said.

Please dont take this the wrong way, its not meant to be offensive.


But if the dog is a danger/potential danger to kids, then really it ought to be put down. He might be ok most of the time, but what about if he does it again and 'really' seriously injures some other kid? The owner cant take the risk, and if I was the dog owner I dont think I could live with myself if my dog did that to a kid. Also if I was the parent of the kid, I would expect something to be done. Plus next time the police might be involved, or worse.

I have to agree with northepaul regarding the dog though. If my Boo was to ever bite anyone unprovoked, never mind a child we would have to take THAT trip to the vet even though it would absoutely break my heart to do it. Hope they can get what happened clarified so they know if it was unprovoked attack or a nasty one-off. Its not a decision I would envy them.

It all depends, on exactly how it happened. Was the dog being aggressive, or was it 'all a mistake'?
What adult was responsible for child/dog at the time? A moment of inattention is simply human, but you need to be sure what really happened before condemning an animal to death, for what might have been a moment of clumsiness!

Sounds pretty nasty, especially for such a youngster.

I was bitten in the face by the next-door neighbour's dog when I was about 4-5. It was a tiny puncture wound that was left and it healed on its own without leaving a scar or needing any treatment. The dog was also placid most of the time and I played with it whenever I was round at theirs. At the time I was just stroking it while the adults were talking and it just suddenly turned its head and bit me.
Being so young I was mortified, and we never knew why it did it, it didn't seem to get angry, perhaps I just stroked a painful part of its back, who knows?
I think in both instances putting a dog down is quite drastic as I believe ANY dog could behave like this without warning. In so many instances we hear, "the dog is usually so placid", and yet it still happens.

Sylvia, that is just horrible. I hope your wee nephew heals without any scars. Perhaps it is best the dog stays away from Corey.

Hope the physical and mental damage isnt long lasting. Could easily leave the young lad with a long lasting fear of dogs, which would be a shame.
