Are all our southern Frenchies OK?

Just heard on the news about flash floods in the south of France. Hope everyone is OK.

It's raining non stop here and my poor potager is puddled all over I dread to think what will become of the bean seeds I put in the other day. Still, I can't complain, it seems as if we are the lucky ones.

Just lit the wood burner for a bit of cheer.

Thankfully, I can't think of any grapes who live that far southeast - I hope I'm not wrong! Truly scary pics on TV

Seen pics in newspaper - dreadful scenes of cars afloat and reports of now 15 lost. Very sad.

we have had immense amounts of rain ....but nothing like whats happening in the south east .....I judge how bad it is by whether the river floods - and it hasnt......its just grey and miserable when it shouldnt be ...

Well no rain here today, but very very windy. The news reports of down south looked devastating. You just don't expect this type weather in June.

A mate of mine lives just east of Marseille, and I met up with him yesterday as I had a 6 hour layover in the airport.
I hadnt heard of the floods, but he told me about them, does sound bad.
Normally when I fly there at this time of year the sea is a brilliant azure blue, right up to the shore, but I noticed how brown it was, showing a lot of discharged water from the rivers.

The news reports of down south looked devastating. You just don't expect this type weather in June.

My thoughts go out to those who have been affected but I get incensed by comments from officials complaining about the weather.

I read a report yesterday where an official said it hadn't been this bad for ten years. He was trying to explain how bad it was now.

However, I read that as saying that ten years ago a similar thing happened. I remember the Dordogne being badly affected 20 odd years ago. No doubt a similar thing will happen again in coming years.

So if this happens every ten years or so why haven't the officals done something about it?

Big tsunamis don't happen that often but after the big one a few years back lots of action was taken to minimise damage and loss of life when the next one does come along.

Why don't officails in areas that flood do the same?

Where I live West Bay used to be completely swamped year after year. After a particularly humendous flood about 15 years ago every effort was made to keep the ocean at bay. Wessex Water spent a lota lota money and completely overhauled our drainage and flood plain. Their efforts have made acres of land suitable for building new homes and given those living near the sea peace of mind. We just never have floods now.

I think there's been way too much building down that way - especially on flood-vulnerable land. There's no-where for the water to go.
