During the past few weeks I have had pots knocked off the rear wall in the garden. Same thing this morning. As I was picking up the debris I realised something strange was going on. Next to the wall is where the water butt should have been sited. We filled it yesterday so it was no light weight but the thing had been toppled over and had emptied it's load. Unfortunately the flood has loosened the roots of a 12' golden conifer and it now looks unsafe. What on earth is going on?

I filled a water but at the top of the allotment the other day and left the hose in the butt.
Disconnected hose at the tap.
Came back the next day to find water butt empty?? ........All I can think of is that the water had syphoned back out and down the hose as there are no leaks in the butt!...Curioser & curiouser!!!!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

I had a full water butt on my plot (no access to public except over the fence to the bungalows). Next day, empty butt on it's side. Bottom cracked, lid cracked.
I guess someone climbed over the fence, stood on the butt and went right through it. I now wish I'd filled it with stinky comfrey teaAll gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

Snadger. I reckon it syphoned itself. I have the T shirt.
TS. Whoever, whatever did the damage to your butt got a bit more than they were expecting. I can just picture it.
I am still none the wiser as to the culprit in my case. I did think it was a badger but why it chose to take that route when it could have taken the scenic one I will never know.

Do you have foxes, ours are like German Shepherds.........sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”

Bigmal Be it badger, poltergeist or german shepherd type fox it has made us destroy our beautiful golden tree. I planted this as a babe and I winced at every sorry cut of the axe man's blow.
