  • Workshops and Man Sheds

This thread is aimed at the blokes but if you girlies insist you too can join in, purely in the spirit of fair play. These are Man sheds or workshops not allotment sheds I am talking about

I am fortunate enough to have access to the rear of our home and have built a rather large workshop. However, it isnt big enough as when I went in there this evening to make some posh wooden plant labels for the lottie i couldnt get near to the sawbench let alone cut wood.

    Six hours later:-

    I can see the floor,
have all of my home made cider sitting in racks,
have all of my tools back into their homes,
have binned the post Christmas tat
have even peeled up the raspberry jelly made at Christmas (but ended up in the shop as the microwave caught fire and the workshop had an extinguisher, that wasnt dry powder),
laid out all of the seed taties in trays till I plant them,
Laid out all of my onion sets in trays ready for planting,
Cut 6 bags of kindling from all of the collected bits of wood that I kept tripping over,
Found a old copy of Razzle with somebody who looked like Mrs D in it,
And finally rigged up an ariel for our old 32" tv so that I can watch 6 nations Rugby whilst wood butchering.

From a blokes perspective, do you ever have enough room in your shed or workshop and secondly, do you ever let the OH in willingly other than to bring you a cuppa?

I don't have a workshop at present but am getting one built - 12ft x 24ft - at my MG. It'll also have a concrete apron 5ft wide round it, a stove and a workbench, but given I have two sheds and a greenhouse full to bursting, I doubt it'll be big enough.

No and what strange phrase is "bring me a cuppa"?

My allotment shed resembles two portaloos strapped together, one with some tools I would not miss if they go missing in and the other a rainshelter for the dog and I.

At home I have an 8'x6' shed, which contains so much kit that no-one can get in without removing something first, that is if something does not fall out when the door is opened.

The integral garage has a walkthrough path through it, but two bicycles have to be taken out before one can walk through.

The other shed was the kids playshed, the first floor is now reinforcing a side wall as they could not fit under it anymore. It also has bicycles in it plus all our caravanning gear since the caravan sprang a leak and we could not afford / it was not worth the cost of repairing it.

      BUT...

I have a cunning plan....to build a workshop shed using breeze block walls and a bitumous corrugated roof, possibly with a clear roof panel...... don't wake me up for a bit please, it's really nice in my dream shed.....zzzz zzzz zzz.

Well this girlie just does the girlie bit and goes nowhere near the shed. OH keeps dear knows what in there , but I just ask for lawnmower, hedgetrimmers, tools etc to be brought out. Good grief, there could be dust, mice, monsters or anything in there. Method in the madness me thinks

The shed is mine unfortunately! OH has his own workshop and then we have a huge air raid shelter, which is full of all manners of things, including two largish Shetland trees (a sycamore and a larch) which are drying out and which will eventually be "turned" into something. Now that is a place for mice, spiders, and anything creepy crawley you can think of - that is definately OH's space!

But yes to answer your question Piglet OH's workshop is definately his own, I daren't touch ANYTHING if I want to continue living!

This is another 'girlie' with a workshop. It used to be a cow shed, and this will make you all green, it's 5m x 25m Wonderful space but, still not big enough, and it's ALL MINE. CK is not into DIY or anything of the like and only ventures in when forced to searching for some thing I have pinched. BUT just think how long it take me to sort it out when I have been dumping stuff in there

I have two freezers and a tumble dryer in OH shed and every time he sees me going in he comes out to the garden and says " what do you want in there"
Its his shed so he has to tidy it. I just store my bits and pieces in it.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Another girlie with a workshop. Mine is at the back of the house/front of the garden. It is 12' x 10' with a 3' 'overhang' at the front. It has light, electricity and water and is due to get a radiator sometime.

It houses the washing machine, tumble drier, booze fridge and freezer. In addition OH has loads of car parts, car interiors etc in there. At the moment, because the garden shed is partially demolished, it also has the gardening tools, hover mower and strimmer in it. Oh, and a couple of horse rugs which are drying out ready for repair!

It could be double the size and still not be big enough as then I would have to put my industrial sewing machine out there too!
                  Happy Gardening,

Mine is 25 feet by 30 feet( sorry dont do metric). Its really the garage but we dont park the cars in it .Its got a small high security area where all my good tools and fishing tackle is kept in (about 8ft by 8ft) .Two fridge freezers and the kids toys keep trying to take over the rest of the space ..but in six years they haven't managed it yet.Need the floor space for car servicing and a bit of welding .
OH is banned from the shed as she would see to much and want to store stuff in it .As the attic isn't full yet I see no need to broden her horizons yet - at least magpies only collect shiny things

Its that place above the ceiling in a house that my wife thinks is for storing all the junk of the day- christmas decorations, empty cardboard boxes, boxes that things came in , old clothes do I have to go on.Apart from the crimbo decorations the rest is stuff that will never see the light of day but try throwing it out-"that might be usefull" says she.

Nope, still don't get it. Must be something to do with having a Dutch roof - approximately a 6" gap between ceilings upstairs and roof outside! All our junk is on permanent display or hidden in the in law's roof space!

Getting crimbo deccies out is a real pain and often we buy new ones instead - one day we will have to clear their loft out and then I don't know what we will do!!

Get rid of it - on Freecycle. That way, it's being useful, but not cluttering up your house!
