I heard a phrase last night ...

Whilst I'm not at all bilingual, I'm quite comfortable in French, but I heard a phrase last night that, although the meaning has now been explained to me, I cant begin to see how it means what it does.

Any takers for the following phrase:

Les Anglais debarquent.

Well my phone tells me that it means "The English have Landed"........is that right?

Just that as far as I am aware...we did 'invade' the North of France for centuries boble-
...they do have exceptionally long memories ya know- what with all this Joan of Arc stuff n all ( she was after all only 19 when we burned her at the stake!)
I'd guess it's something to do with that

Alternatively it could poss mean that the English 'roast beefs' have started to arrive for their annual frazzle on the beaches and in the campsites

Scarey is correct but has cheated so no points awarded.
I had to ask for the phrase to be repeated several times, but still didnt get the sense. It was then explained to me, but had to ask "why?" but nobody knew.

I asked my French teacher about it today too, she knows about the phrase but said that she has never heard it used in everyday conversation. As you can imagine, that sparked off a very strange conversation
