not sure of his name, but definately looks russian. it's not rasputin though. he looks downright scary and forbidding- you wouldn't want to cross him! ( i dont think i would feel comfortable with him peering down at me from a wall)

i reckon he could be a connection of the last russian royal family. i was thinking along the lines of a balding nicolaus ll, but think not- not bald enough before his life ended. but browsing through old photos of the family on youtube there is a man in some of the pictures who is similar to this one. check out michal of the same family- there is a picture of him with another man, who could be this one. the russian royal family would have iconic status throughout the empire.

and still not ruling lenin out- although when he was balding, he had a beard. really should not be sitting at computer trying to solve the mystery at this time - but just what i like doing!!

Thanks to a suggestion by Incy, I'm now sure that the first one is Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows. There is a virtually identical painting from which the woodcut seems to have been taken.

I guess the man must indeed be someone like a founder of a church or charity but presumably too obscure or geographically distant to be recognisable. How he came to be in a Lincoln charity shop, we may never know!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

I will try and do a bit of research into the other for you Seahorse. It may have to wait till I have access to my dad and his library in August though

I would look to Political figures in the last 200 years of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Czech Republic. Lincoln has (as I'm sure you already know) very strong ties with those countries because of the farming community and he's probably an idealist / freedom fighter type character

Our Lady of Sorrows is the patron saint of Slovakia, so perhaps that gives a clue to the origin and possibly helps with the identity of the gentleman.

That would be quite a lot to check.Might be a poet/writer/composer or scientist/doctor.I had somebody in mind -marshall-but they were usually portrayed in their uniforms.I t would help a lot if you knew the country of origin of these pictures.
