  • We won.....

The Young Cooperatives Ethical Challenge. A while ago I posted asking for any spare seeds people would be willing to donate, and a number of very kind grapes responded.

Th venture was (and still is) a huge success. We have had a number of plant sales, some of the tutor group have planted out plants in their gardens at home for produce to sell later, and we have the egg business up and running. We won the business competition in school, and then were invited (as one of 8 finalists, some of whom did not bother to show up!) to present our business in Birmingham. I picked 3 students who had be instrumental in the successful culmination of the ideas, and we travelled up yesterday. All the schools had to provide an activity, ours was a taste test featuring homemade brownies from Fairtrade products and homemade jams and chutneys (all made by me and Kissykit). It was very popular, the others relied heavily on paper based activities.
The presentation was in front of 2 Coop judges and Claire Young (Young Appentice). The kids were great, they had made their own PowerPoint and written their own scripts. We won the Most Innovative Business Award, the Greenest Business Award and the Overall Best Business Award.
Again, thank you so much for helping us out, we are intending to carry on in September, and have plans to train the students to make their own jams and chutneys if we can get them trained in the hygiene certificates needed, as well as selling the eggs and growing food.

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Wow, thats fantastic news, well done to you all!! Bet the kids are well chuffed! Thanks again for the butterflies they were a huge success, and jacks whole class enjoyed seeing their progress.

We are trying to set up a growing scheme at my boys school and Ive posted a thread with areas we can look at to get it going. have a look and let me know if you have any tips, they will be very appreciated.

I think it may be an uphill struggle, but we have a few determined parents and governers and a couple of keen teachers. So I just want to make sure I have all the angles covered when we meet on wednesday.

When i met with the PTA last week it wasnt exacly positive, lots of points of CRB checks potential problems, when all I wanted to know was whether people felt as I did that it deserved a dedicated group in its own right to look at it rather than swallowing up valuable PTA time.

Wish us luck, we have some graet space and some positive folk on board.......fingers crossed.

Well done again to all of you! your hard work paid off

You have to loose sight of the shore sometimes to cross new oceans

I would be a perfectionist, but I dont have the time
