I expect to pay for the water I use on my garden. What really aggrevates me is friends and colleagues who are not on a meter. One such person has bragged to me they have the lushest lawn in Somerset because he runs his hose 24 hours a day all on water rates - £25 per month! So the North West has a housepipe ban which means people like me who pay will not be able to maintain their gardens. How much of this is as a result of the abuse from those without meters. Why can't the water authorities get them on meters NOW!

If you live in the Cotswolds then our ban in the NW won't affect you at all
Also, I'm not on a meter but don't abuse water, have never watered my grass and have a significant amount of water butts. Yes some people abuse it but some people are like that
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Im in the NW without a meter but it doesnt mean i use my water like its going out of fashion.... i do feel very daft filling my watering cans with a hose at the mo & then watering the plants that way rather than a quick 5mins with the hose. Although if your neighbour has his hosepipe on 24hrs a day then i would be complaining as well but dont tar all us non metered people with the same brush )

I can't see that a water meter makes that much difference to the extortionate bill anyway Indeed I do not have a meter, I am very frugal with water, and wouldn't dream of using a sprinkler on my lawn. My neighbour on the other hand seems to have the thing going during the hottest part of everyday.(no idea if they have a meter) what i found truly jawdropping is that it was aimed 95% at the gravel drive the other afternoon.....ignorant and selfish.
Nevermind... a hosepipe ban (or my summer holiday) is a surefire guarantee of floods.Last edited by Paulottie; 12-07-2010, 06:20 AM.

Isn't this turning into a bit of "rich man doesn't have to worry about the cost of water and has a lush green lawn" and everyone else looks after water.
Saying that I was at a rich mans house the other day and it was remarked about his green lawn. I don't care he said, no water meter, hose going all the time.
What can you say to people like that? Ignorant and doesn't care about anyone else but himself, you know the type, will argue himself blue in the face against anything to do with "greenness""Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble"
Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Under the Water Industry (Prescribed Conditions) Regulations 1999, there are circumstances where a water company can insist on the installation of a water meter. This is called "selective metering" and these circumstances can include:
* customers who have a swimming pool and ponds in excess of 10,000 litres
* customers using automatic watering devices (including sprinklers)
* customers with a power shower or an extra large bath
