I think my name means "youthful". That's fine by me (40 this year, and yes! weighing less than I did at 17 )

Is shortening, or lengthening, names a regional thing?

I've lived all over and the south west is the worst I've come across for this. My Nan, bless her, used to lengthen names if she couldn't shorten them. Hence my cousins are Shauny & LeeLee.

My name was shortened from a very lengthy Juliana to Julie and then to Ju. I particularly hate Ju. It was the BH who started Jules 27 years ago, but my mother still refuses to use it.

Also, you know you are in bother in this house when full names instead of pet names are used.

My real name can be used by male and female alike and yes, i do think my name suits me, at least my mother always said so.

I think that you often associate names with the people you know so if you once knew somebody who was a right cow called a certain name then you associate that name with right cows. As far as my name's concerned, it's my name so to me when I look in the mirror I just see somebody called Alison, had it almost 40 years and it's just me but am guessing I'd be the same if I was called something else. Often get it abbreviated to Al (which I like) and occaisionally to Ally but use to hate being called Ali-bongo when I was at school.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hmmm, I have just received the details of someone who's coming to work in the near future, including his photo so I can recognise him at the airport.
Its a foreign name but its pronounced "Gurner," and its another one that fits perfectly according to the girls in the office.

i don't like my name and always wanted it to be more dramatic; something like lydia, madeline, leonore. ( both of my sisters have pretty names, so i was always a bit jeolous). now, to be fair, i have just looked up the meaning of my name which apparently means 'of the lake', or 'pretty'. i am hoping that equates to mermaid-like, and not cod-like!!

Apparently, in Gaelic (any experts out there can confirm or deny) my first name Kenneth, means born of fire, and put with my middle name - John - translates as 'Brave Warrior'???
