School questions

As you know we are trying to get a school garden going. On Wednesday we are going to visit another schools garden nearby.
What questions do you think we should ask? Don't want to come away and go "DOh, we forgot to ask .....!"

I take kids from the local secondary school as part of a Rural Skills Development programme and as a result have been sort of involved in an advisory capacity as they set up their new veg garden. The two most important questions for you to ask that spring to mind in my tired wee brain are do they have any creative fund-raising ideas and whomlooks after the crops, harvests them and ultimately uses them when the school is closed for its summer holiday. The Jjannie at our local secondary has scored big time on the second point!!

I always make a mind map or a list of

- how
- what
- why
- when
- where
- who

For my own Garden Club, that would be:

- how do we get funding?
- what are we allowed to plant?
- why are we doing this? Justify why, for fund raising purposes
- when is the gardening going to occur?
- where will the garden be sited?
- who has ultimate responsibility for its care, and who can be delegated to?

As you know, we started very basically, with a few pots, compost & seeds from the Morrisons vouchers, and a lot of plants & seeds from my own garden.
The school very happily gave me free rein to do what I want!
and I've been given a key so I can water & weed during the school hols.

It might get a bit more complicated in Sept, because the teacher wants to add some raised beds. This will entail fundraising, and he's already told me he's too busy to sort that out ....
