It's not just your liver though, it's the entire system - alcohol depletes all sorts of necessary vitamins and trace elements from the body, and fills you with empty calories instead Which lowers your natural defences.
It's also a depressant, meaning your body/brain will struggle to produce enough endorphins to keep your mood buoyant, thus you feel a bit 'down' and have a drink to 'feel better'. It's a vicious cycle, and the best way to deal with it is to get off altogether. Bloody tough though.

Last but by no means least, if you stop, you realise just how much it's been deadening your head

However it is worth remembering that the odd drink now and then is fine and if done in a social setting can be very pleasurable so it doesn't have to be a total stop - although a break can be good if you've been overdoing it

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Which pretty much sums up where I am

I do love Sarz's last line comment, about deadening the head - after just 12 days I am already noticing a difference - will report back at the end of my month

OK OK. I do know that science has defined the maximum intake of alcohol. So why do I abuse it?
I know when I have had enough. I never ever get drunk. I never get a hangover. I am as bright intellectually as I ever was, even considering age. I do not believe that my body has aged beyond it's years. I am still energetic and still am a complete woman so am at a loss to understand how it is diminishing my quality of life.
I do not advocate alcohol excess but.....we all must learn our limits.

Well done Piskie, taking a break is always a good plan, and not always easy.

I wont add to everyones excellent reasons for stopping, I stopped for all of the above and then some

              Good on yer Pisk!

              Feels sooo much better dunnit!!?

Personally, I've just finished a G&T, it's a medicinal crutch at the moment until I know what's happening with my, erm, 'bits'

Yes, it's an excuse, but I do drink about the same in a whole week now, as I used to in just two evenings. And yes, I do feel so much better.

Good on ya girl! I had a break after moving to Spain and being embarrassed by the horrible pee-heads out there, 4 years later I still haven't started again

It's weird going out sober when everyone else is hammered but you can act a total prat and they'll just think you're peed as well - that's how I get round it. People are amazed when I say I was sober that night when such and such happened etc.

Also my life is pretty turbulent at the moment and I've discovered it is easier to deal with without a hangover.

I was being my usual social, lively, bubbly self (not blowing smoke, I just know cos I'm told ) and the copper next to me said 'what are you drinking' - 'lime and soda' says I....'blimey, if that's what your like on lime and soda, what are you like on alcohol?'

Still not sure how to take that, but Snowdrop says it was a back-handed compliment that I'm sociable - hehehe

Well done you, not a minor achievement at all!
I'm always happy to be the designated driver (much to OH's relief!), but there's usually a point in the evening when I'm glad I'm not drinking! OH used to drink a lot more, but because I don't drink on school nights he's gradually come round to my way of doing things.

I think it's because I was cunning enough never to mention it!!! shhhhh

Well done you, keep up the good work.

Personally, I rarely drink. Last week my girls bought me a bottle as a thank you gift and I had 2 glasses in one night. I am proud to say that 2 is about 1 1/2 too many for me

I'm in no way saying you are as I've never met you so please don't take this personally but I've heard an alcoholic colleague say exactly the same thing so it can be difficult to judge things sometimes.

Whooo there you two lovely ladies - ease up please!

This post was about me (yer I know, me me me ) and something that I had achieved because I wanted to and felt I also needed to - it certainly isn't about anyone else needing to feel that they were being challenged on their lifestyle.

                          Please - thank you

I took a leaf out of your book, Piskie! Last night went out with the girls for a meal - we were all driving anyway so we all had soft drinks. Great, woke up this morning with a clear head and a lot of work to be getting on with!

Now where did I leave my car keys????
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?
