      Good isn't it!

I went on a medically enforced dry spell for about 4/5 months this year; and didn't miss it as much as I thought I would.

Since being 'allowed' to drink again, I've not drunk as much as before (which wasn't a lot anyway) and I've been much more selective about what I drink and when

I rarely drink when there is work next day (lager with a curry or chilli is the likeliest reason), I invariably stop drinking for Lent, and the usual 'limit' is 1 bottle of wine goes with 2 evening meals anyway(unless it is a half-strength wine-and-juice combination, then I may finish the whole bottle).
I know I can keep it under control at that level. On holiday I tend to find the use is going up, but it is a few weeks max, and I cut down (or stop completely) for weeks afterwards.
OH tends to drink a bit more than he should (quite a lot more than me) but if I point out that it is getting too much, he DOES cut down for a while (typically to about my normal level).
Both of us drink with meals, and rarely any other time. We don't often have the sort of social situation that leads to alcohol (typically when son and DiL are around).
The hardest thing about 6 weeks abstinence for Lent is that none of the alcohol-free wines taste right! I usually resort to some kind of fancy fruit juice.

Inspired by your willpower I have managed 3 nights this week.

Work "do" for both of us last night, so I drove OH to his, went on to mine and then picked him up on my way home. I had a bottle chilling in fridge, but when I got home decided to have tea instead because of your shining example!!

          small steps 'n all that!!

I know there are lots of people for whom alcohol is 'all or nothing' (ie, if they drink at all they drink too much), and it seems common for folk to drink for the 'drunk' effect.
It's just that neither of these situations applies to me. I drink wine (or beer) with a meal, because I like the flavour combination (of the food and the drink). When I'm off alcohol for Lent, I drink fruit juice or squash instead. Water is only a meal-accompanying drink if it has bubbles in.....
Dropping the drinks wouldn't help my weight problem!

We have a vast amount of wine at the moment but after two weeks of imbibing on holiday I'm not that bothered. Usually its a couple of glasses with the sunday roast., and maybe the odd glass with tea in the week.

It was tough for me today, I came very close to a long vodka!!

We are laying a patio (see carrying slabs thread) and I worked my butt off in the garden all day, humping very large bags of sand, slabs, digging etc - Snowdrop poured himself a long beer at the end of working, I was sooo close, but (goodness knows how!) I held out
