My Mum often bought presents (for the following year) in the Januaray sales, and that goes back at least 40 years, and then there are those hampers you pay for week by week over the year (exhorbitant prices for things half of which you won't use, better to buy anything non-perishable as you go through the year, and hide it in the attic until December).
I can see the point to spreading the cost out, but when advertising starts so far ahead, WHY?????? (well mainly to get more money spent...)
