I stopped 2 years past March, and it was the best thing I ever did. Still can't quite get my head round why I smoked for all those years, what a waste of time, money, health and hygeine! Bleurgggggg....Still go out for the fag breaks at work though...that's where all the interesting gossip is shared!

Tried smoking when I was 13 or 14 and didn't get it at all and am SO grateful for this. Used to smoke the odd one when I was a student and tipsy (well probably blind drunk really) but very few and it was thankfully never my scene. The benefits to my health and pocket of not smoking are well worth it and I've found going out so much more pleasant since the smoking ban came into force - no more waking up with smelly hair and clothes that need washing even if they're not dirty.

I stopped in '95 and for many years after I used to have this awful recurring dream where I was smoking - when I would wake up I felt soooo sad and unhappy, until I realise it was a dream, my day always got better from there on it and it was a great motivator

I have smoked for 12 years. Tried to stop a couple of times. I think the only way I would stop is if they stop selling them in newsagents, off-licences, supermarkets. Wouldn't buy them from shady back street sellers.

I quit 3 years ago and despite the fact I have tried them since I really dont like the taste although I do miss smoking. For me it was more the action of smoking than the nicotine. It was 10 mins for me to get away from everything, very useful when around people you dont like. I do however feel better for not smoking.

I didn't start smoking until relatively late at 17, but by 20 I was going thru a carton of 200 in a week and that was French cigarettes, Gitanes or Gauloise. I smoked on and off until in '89 when I was 32 I made a deal with myself. I went away on a 3 week holiday to Kenya, I allowed myself to smoke all I wanted on holiday but as soon as I set foot back on British soil that was an end to it. Since then, apart from occasional one when I was drunk which I've already regretted the following morning, I've been clean.

If you stopped then your lung capacity would increase and you could cycle even further..........

I used to smoke 2 packets a day but stopped 3 years ago. I'm lucky as I don't miss it at all, can't stand the smell and am really pleased with myself My main motivation was my daughter getting pregnant and telling me she wasn't bringing the baby to a smoky house (quite rightly) and also I didn't want to end up being the "smelly granny"

I guess I could have been a smoker very easily, when I was a kid my dad, sister and brother smoked.

One day a friend & I, thick as thieves, crept into a field of high grass intending to try. It was her idea and she bought the cigarettes - 10 Silk Cut Red. This day was a Sunday and she had just had a big roast lunch. We had our roast in the evenings after my parents had finished DIY & gardening jobs.

Well, it was very exciting...Lisa lit up, it looked so grown up, so sophisticated to us. She took huge lungfuls of smoke...............and promptly choked and threw her dinner up everywhere!!

Oddly, she continued to smoke and I never touched cigarettes after seeing that. It was way back in the heatwave of 1976 so we were lucky we didn't set the field on fire too.
