The French and medications!!!

This place never ceases to bewilder me!!

Having worked in the NHS and seen so much avoidance of potential litigation, this place sometime leaves me gobsmacked at how laid back they are!!!

I registered with a GP and went to see him with a list of my regular medication- can I have these on a regular basis? Yup
Anything else you might need? oh - well- how about XYZ???- I need them from time to time. Yup
Anything else- urmmm...I've never bothered with such and such a problem- is it worth looking into?- Nope- here have this cream/tablets ( didn't even look)

At this point I was starting to feel a bit of a hypochondriac!!!
anything else?....well If you write a letter to my GP- here's his address, I ( my OH) will put in a translation- then they can send you my notes etc.
Bah- no need for that- I believe you.

You OK otherwise?- well I think so...bien- Au revoir!

And then today at the vets- I called in to ask if I could make an appointment to get some tablets for my cat
What for- his skin rash- what do you want- well- I had these strong tablets before- and they seemed to work and I'd like some more- ah - no need to see the vet. How many do you want? Do you think he could do with some steroids too ? NOPE- he's too old..oh OK- let me know if you change your mind.

And, from what I've heard, most medication is applied via the fundament! (Or is that just a nasty rumour?)

Well- that's what I'd heard- but obviously he's either treated Brits before and thought better of offering- or they are changing how they do things!
Apparently the 'French way' is much more quickly absorbed- so in theory a faster form of treatment- and much kinder on the stomach lining!

I recall 23 yrs ago bringing my newborn( 3 months old) over here and he developed an ear infection and I was given some mahooosive submarines to put somewhere. ...needless to say I went back to the Dr.
Interestingly it was about the time of the Jasmine Beckford( sp??) problems- so I was utterly relieved I'd not inserted them!

Whilst here back in dear old blighty the NHS are fundstricken. It's only those who complain enough and demand a second opinion get help.. and if you are elderly....sa la vie. grrrrrr

I love it here. When KK had his skin cancer "episode" we were given a prescription to collect a box of medications for the nurse to use when he came to the house to change the dressings - this was completely reimbursable. he didn't use much of it so we have boxes and boxes of dressings, gauze, bandages, rubber gloves, scissors plasters... the list is endless. Brilliant for us but I can't help wondering about the cost to the country.

As an aside, Scarey's Mum is staying with us and needs a blood test for her warfrin (sp?) levels. We just went to the phamacy and told them, they made the appointment and voilla! the blood was taken, analysed and sent to the clinic in UK by the next day. As I said, I love it here

and when i need a blood test (cholesterol etc) the nurse comes to the house first thing in the morning to do it and i get the result in a day or two (you have to pay for everything tho even tho you get a proportion of it back) and in the UK i'd be getting everything free...........

You should be getting everything back, methinks for a test like that. Is your mutuel ok?
