What gadget do I need?

Following on from recent threads, about kenwoods etc, I haven't got a clue what I should be looking for..
My hands are a bit shot from repetitive stuff, so I'm after something that grates and slices stuff [ mainly for chutneys/breadcrumbs], and something that liquidises things [soups].
I'm not after a monstrosity machine that will take over my tiny kitchen, just something that does the above.

What should I be looking for? [sounds like a riddle doesn't it? ]

I bought a moulinex food processor secondhand on Ebay that has all those gadgets, taff, and it can do dough/whip cake mixtures/chop/slice liquidise etc. Easy to use although it is quite big, but you really dont need anything else...

I agree with Thea, I think you need a food processor. I have a Kenwood one that I've had for 20 years and it's still going strong. I use it for grating potato for rostis, carrots for carrot cake, make digestives into crumbs for cheesecake bases, rubbing fat into flour for pastry, crumbles, shortbread, biscuits, etc etc. It will even do bread dough, but not such a big quantity as my Chef.

Ideally you're best off asking friends / family what they have and then acutally have a look at it and use it in anger as the sales bumph tries to tell you that you need far more than you actually need and it's very easy to end up spending far more than you want for things that you have need (or room!) for.

None of my friends actually have anything resembling what i actually want it for, the nearest thing is my MILs bowl thingy with whisk/dough hook etc a jug that fits on the side to liquidise things, which isn't what I'm after.

A single bowl with various grating/slicing attachments is about all I need. Does such a thing exist?

It depends on how big a volume you want, my brother and his wife were saying the other week that they rarely use their big processor (think it's at the back of a cupboard and difficult to get out) but tend to use their bamix add on thing mostly (Bamix® SliceSy - Lakeland, the home of creative kitchenware) which is like a mini processor. It won't do big volumes but is easy to store and you can batch slice / grate etc. You can also use the bamix as a stick blender so it looks pretty versitile although not cheap.

Ooooh, thanks for that link Alison - we have a Bamix, and I notice they haven't gone up since we bought ours in 1997!!! I may have to get the SliceSy attachment.

I would go for a Bamix (or similar) too. It will do everything you want and has the advantage of being much smaller than a food processor or mixer.

Check or put an wanted ad on freecycle, as loads of folk buy a food processor and then pass it on, because they don't use or do much cooking.

They are great for grating, chopping and slicing all the lottie veg.

I thouight about it, and looked roujnd the shops, still couldn't find what I wanted.

In the end, I was looking through the cupboards, tried the grater, too messy and you miss bits with it, then looked at the tomato puree thingy, would have been too fine. Then I found the spong [yes really] mincer I liberated from a skip.
Does the job perfectly...saved myself some money too

Thanks you for all the advice too, when I eventually get a bigger kitchen, a food processor is where it's at.
