    LOL, that just reminded me..........
When our neighbours decided to renew their vows they asked OH to give a little speech . He rounded off the speech with an ancient (so he said ) welsh poem that had been handed down and tradition was that the youngest family member had to read the translation after. As it happens one of the guests was welsh and spoke it so OH was nervous but he said that he'd done ok. Not bad for a few lines I got translated on t'internet and then found a site that did it phonetically for him to learn...........oh and the verse ( that my youngest read with her best dramatic abilities and a very straight face) was .....

Neighbours, everbody has good neighbours etc etc.......

once it started to sink in everybody was in fits

how about mesnes park? pronouced mains not mes-nes as strangers like to call it. i would never correct a strangers speech, thats just rude imo. my youngest grandaughter says she can speak wiganese, lots of a's in every word eg friday becomes fri-daaaaaay. just lazy speech really. however, we say tong (for tongue) and in kendal where i used to live they say tung!! lmao you don't say chaise lung!! lol

Loads there I would have got... not quite right but not TOO far out, but then I am fond of some old English surnames such as
              Featherstonehaigh
              Cholmondely
(there are others, but I can't spell them).
Would I correct someone? Only if I wasn't sure what they meant and was asking "do you mean ......?"
Would I be offended if corrected by a stranger? Not if they weren't sure what I meant, especially in Spain where the ladies on my favourite fruit-and-veg stall usually DO correct my pronunciation (they speak even less English than my Spanish, we mostly get by on numbers, smiles and pointing.....)

Actually Loughton is now 'really posh' and has all sorts of footballers wives and I was born there, don't you know.
They pronounce it Laaaaaaaaah ton (bit like you're retching)

Receptionists have a real problem with my surname, so now at the doctor's I write it down for them.

Someone I know has the surname St John (Sin-jun) but calls himself Clark at work.

How about Dalziel? (Dee-ell) Or Menzies? (Ming-iss)

Many people say that the correct pronunciation of 'Featherstonehaugh' is 'Fanshaw'. Actually, it's a bit more complicated: there are 5 different pronunciations, all acceptable - Featherstonehaw, Freestonehaw, Featherstonehew, Freestonehew, and Fanshaw. So I read somewhere, anyway.
